what's the button i feel when i press the gas pedal to the floor

when i press the gas pedal all the way to the floor, i can feel a button that presses. i figure it's to downshift in an automatic. too bad it does nothing for me. and no, i don't feel like RTFM right now.

I tried S[ing]TFF. Couldn't find the aforementioned thread. Anyone care to demonstrate how it's done?

This is why we need an index.

With a manual transmission it does nothing.

With an automatic it acts as a kickdown, dropping the car into a lower gear for better acceleration.

Go to search. Enter "gas and pedal and button" with out the quote marks. This should get you started.

add: on automatics it not just downshift, but it downshift to the lowest possible gear at speed.

I had already done that -- with those exact words. Have you?
And did you find it?

The kickdown button is one of my favorite things! Can't believe some people don't use it. Really cool when you have to pass on a 2-lane road...you can be cruising at 65 behind somebody, kick it down, the engine revs like crazy and you shoot by them like they're going backwards.

Yes.
I got 22 threads. I only looked at the first couple and the "button" was discussed in both. I'm not saying all 22 threads are dead on subject, but the answer to the question what is the button and what does it do is available in this list. In short, it was discussed before and a search would have yielded the info.
I've nothing against people asking questions w/o a prior search, but if you do and the subject has been beat to death, then you have to expect to have someone tell you to do your homework instead of doing it for you....kinda reminds one of your parents approach doesn't it .
BTW, the is good info about searching the forums in the sticky at the beginning of this forum's list.

I like to call it the "I've pushed far enough button." I've usually kicked it down two to four gears before then anyway.

On my last trip to Colorado I found this button with my unshoed foot. I could press it behind the pedal while the car was in cruise control. It did nothing. I have an automatic. I would only guess that it is some sort of feeler. I assume the throttle position sensor can tell where the throttle is positioned without the help of the button.

Someone else try it and post back or flame.

It also is the WOT button. On the standard shift it just verifies that the throttle is at WOT and adjusts the computer accordingly. You will most likely not feel any diference but it tells the computer to kick down if it can on autos and also that the throttle which of course is drive by wire that the gas is all the way down and the butterfly in the throttle body should be open as far as it can open.

Here's another idea on the button.

Perhaps it also used for diagnostics in the shop. Example: When you push the button 3 times, turn steering wheel lock-to-lock, press reset button and count to five, an access door revealing the in-dash CD changer opens.

Seriously though, I bet it has some purpose other than limiter override (in europe) and WOT on autos.

My favorite phrase here, other than "free muffins and cookies".
You mean FM&C?

FC&CW = Free cookies and car washes.

i do not use the 'button' anymore after i figured out the transmission can "learn" my gas pedal movements as well. i just slightly hit the gas pedal way before the button and it downshifts.

It's connected to my AMG Nitrous and my underbody brabus neon. I plan on also connecting it up to my automatic curb feelers so they retract at speed.

Rumor has it if you start the car while pressing it down (not the pedal just the button), the car starts in super dyno mode witch also turns regular head lamps into tri-xenon bulbs on coupes and quad-xenon bulbs on sedans. On the European models, the sunroof always works if you use the pedal button once a day.

-Just havin some fun

Buenas noches...
