Catalytic converter? Wondering if its time to replace it?
I have a 2005 C230 Kompressor with 87000miles. I have noted the last 10K or so that their is a bit of a rattling sounds metalic from under the car at medium to normal accelleration. Is not visable at hard or very light accelleration. Also noticed after coming to a stop waiting at a light for a while you can hear a very low thumping which sound like some one is in the trunk just tapping on the back seats a little. You can not feel any thuds you can just hear it a bit. I use to have a 1998 BMW 740iL which required catalytic converter replacement due to rattling under the car at accelleration and some loss in power. Anyone replaced the cat on these cars? I'm in California and all online part sellers list the cat as 49state legal no sale in CA.

First off check to see if it is actually the cat. Make sure it isn't just a bad exhaust hanger or the the exhaust hitting a part of the body/frame. You can also have your emissions tested to see if it is working correctly. If the cat is working properly, and it is indeed making noise, it is up to you if you want to spend the $.
