amg looking tail lights

Just saw a c 280 with tinted tail lights. It was tinted only in the white part to look like a AMG look. I stopped the guy driving it and he told me he purchased them from www.smokedlamps.com. Anyone seen this. I thought it looked cool.

all the new AMGs have clear tail signal like the regular cars other than the SL55.

I am not sure about US but in the Europe, smoked lens taillamps are usually found on Avant Garde models.

Smokedlamps.com does amazing work. I just got my tails back from them a few days ago...I haven't installed them yet...but they came out great.

The only problem with them is that instead of one day like they promised it took over 1 month. They wanted me to take out my tails and send it to them...I would have been without a car for that time. Luckily I bought a second set of tails...

Thanks for the info. I allready called and asked about turn around time. I am local so they said half day to do my lamps. I asked if it took longer for out of state customers, and they replied only the time it takes to ship is added. Then I mentioned what Eric said about the turn around time and they actually remembered doing it for him, but stated in defence that the consumer mentioned that he was not in a hury because he purchased other lamps.

That is true, I did say I was not in a hurry, but if I had, I am not 100% sure it would have been done in time. My advice is to buy a set from them or elsewhere...I woudn't take the chance.

Pics will be up tonight...plus I can sell my tails if someone wants them...if not i am going to have them tinted and then resell them.

There is one tail on eBay right now, be careful, read the auction, its cracked..and they can't work with cracked lenses.

i know this sounds stupid but I have a few questions.
So did you have to send the whole assembly? or were you able to just take the lens off? Is this legal or does it vary by local law?

You send the whole assembly, not just the lense.
It is not legal in any state, however if you get a ticket depends on the cop. In my area they are very strict, so I had them "lightly smoked."

I had mine "lightly smoked" and it came out perfect. He smoked just the red area, leaving the clear part alone. They look dark compared to the OEM tails, but on their own they look like some tails from other manufacturers. They look like dark red, not black. I took pics, they look very dark in the pics, but in real life they are not that dark...give me a few mins i'll upload them.

I was wondering how it would look on a black car since mine is black as well... looks great. Now gonna call dealer and see how much they charge for a spare set of tail lights.
Thanks Erik for the pics.

Search the Coupe forum, http://www.csportcoupe.com/forums/sh...ed+tail+lights

Vince has a Black Coupe with smoked tail lights that looks good. Should be a factory option in the darker colors

Also you can smoke the tail lenses yourselves. I bought the can of tint at a local Ricer shop, with tax $27. Sure beats the $120-150 that places who tint window charge for smoke tinting the tail lights.
If you just do the inside one can would would be enough. I intend on doing the outside surface red only. Will leave the clear brake top portion alone. If you spray the smoke tint on the outside, remove the 4 nuts on each side. Apparently you also need to spray clear over the outside. Sounds like it can be done on one Saturday.

It can be done in an afternoon, just 2 things:
1. Make sure the lenses are absolutely clean - use rubbing alcohol or something else to make sure.
2. Find a dust-free area. Hardest thing to do, yet makes the biggest difference.

A few dust particles can be compensated with additional clear coat as the clear coat will tend to smooth it all out and dust doesn't seem to show as well in the clear coat layers.

The clear coat is neccessary cause most of the smoke paint is not gloss.

Smoking the inside would do little on our cars, smoke the outside.

Also try it out on something first - the smoke dries much darker than it looks, find how many coats gives you the look you want by testing a small plastic object first (I did my side marker lenses as they will be replaced with clears anyways one day!).

Yes, it can be done by yourself. I am not one to sit and do things myself, so it was worth the money (for me) to pay someone else to do it. This way it comes out right the first time and I don't need to worry.

Man...in NJ smoked lights would fail inspection without a doubt. We have rolling safety checks in a neighboring town...they issue tickets for everything from a blown bulb to a graduation tassle hanging from your rear view mirror. I got pulled over for a clear license plate cover...the cop said it obstructed the plate...but she liked the car, so she let me take the cover off right there at the roadside.

I agree 100%, except you cannot tell my lenses are smoked. They look dark in the picture, but in real life they just look dark red. I got over $1,000 worth of B.S. tickets on my last car...ranging from obstruction of view (radar detector) to covering the word 'Garden State' on my license plate frame (from the dealership). I am confident I will not get pulled over for these lenses.

My CLK grill was a LOT of work. Almost there, I am waiting for the paint to arrive, still cleaning up all the ends I had to cut. I like the large star look much better. I had the C32 front brakes put on last Friday, I am working on my lighted door sills, I finally got the smoke tint in to tint the tail lights.

All this and waiting for my Renntech rear spoiler and Lorinser rear window spoiler, all this and I keep getting the dreaded Check Engine light for the THIRD time!!!! At 4300 miles they replaced the fuel pump. Came back on last Friday at 5000 miles, it went away so I cancelled the appointment.

No sooner cancelled the service appointment when the Check Engine light came on again and has staid on the last two days.
Next appointment is NEXT Friday so I have a long wait.
