My C240 also makes a heavy thump thump noise during idle. I guess it is something that I need to get used to. I don't think there is anything wrong with the car. Is your car still having the original engine oil? I decided to replace the engine oil at 1K miles (I bought the car new but the car has been sitting in the parking lot for about 1.5 years and went through 2 winters) and put Mobil One 0W-40 which I believe is a slightly thicker oil than the original one. It sounds much better now. I think the original oil is 5W-30 which I believe is a bit too thin for California weather.
i have a c200k (m271 engine). can hear ticking noises from inside the cabin when the car has warmed up sufficiently, normally after driving for 1/2 hour and more. any ideas on the cause and action needed ? regards, hanz.

Mine has always had a sound that is like a valve ticking at idle from inside the car, but I can not hear it when I have the hood up and am standing looking at the engine. Mine has 13,000 miles on it and has no oil usage and made this sound since day one. It no longer bothers me now and I am used to it.

Our C240...
...also makes a faint thumping sound at idle, and I do believe it is common with this engine, and nothing to be concerned about. Any replies from 4 cyl owners are probably not relevant - I've driven both, and this is unique to the 6. This is separate and distinct from the ticking noises [valves] that can occasionally occur. The noise you describe in ours is barely noticeable, but always there. I've learned to ignore it.
