Anyone remember...
... a few months ago, someone here said their C-class stalled, the steering wheel locked in one direction and they skidded off the road. I was just curious if he ever found out why. I searched and searched, but I can't find the thread. Anyone remember who it was, or what had caused it?
thanks
Jim

OK, don't know if you saw my PM...
I seem to remember a thread like that where someone said that ESP hadn't helped them in a certain situation where they basically did something stupid, I believe. I'm not sure the steering wheel actually locked up, but rather the car skidded into the curb...
Maybe search w/ "ESP" or "hit a curb"?? I may not be exactly right, but it does ring a bell...
I don't know how to add a link, but check a thread posted by "taylor192" on 6/25/2003, although that's not the one I was thinking of.
OK, here's the one I was thinking of: posted by "pbchow" on 6/15/2003 (titled "understeer").

Nope, that's not the one. I remember this guy ran into a ditch, I believe.
People were asking him if he had ran out of gas, causing the car to shut off and the steering wheel to lock.

Thanks guys! I responded too, but a search under my name yielded no results. I figured it was removed for some reason. The signal to noise ratio sure has been pretty low around here this year

Just to follow up, the steering wheel will not lock just because the engine stalls. Since our key is on the dash, a small motor is used to lock the steering wheel instead of the usual mechanical connection inside the steering column on most cars. The steering wheel lock motor is activated only when you remove the key from the ignition. That's the little motor noise you hear every time you insert or remove the key.
