Engine Upgrades for less than Crazy Mechanics Charge.
Hey guys, been lurking for a while.... :p
I have a few questions if anyone can give opinions on that would be great.
I recently took my Merc to a mechanics to get serviced. When I picked it up they said I would need to replace the Head Gasket as some coolant was slowly leaking into the engine. (fair enough) But then he said its going to cost you $2300AUD.....
That is an outrageous amount of money to just change the Head Gasket.
Anyway so my questions are, what sort of Head/Engine Block modifications should I get done (By someone else) That will both fix the problem and also improve the performance. The engine is only the 1.8L with supercharger. I was thinking of doing a pully Upgrade down the track.
Anyway guys Suggest away.
Also HI everyone

Actually not a bad price, especially consider AU.
Here in the states, my indy recently did a head gasket on an m111
and he said it took 2 day, ie 16 hours, + parts.
His rate is 100 hr US. The dealer is 175 or more.
So...that's about right.
I would do the thermostat and water pump while yer at it.
I'd get an oil analysis 1st though.

How much typically would it cost to put in? $1500?

Ha. That's not high mileage. If anything just look around and see if you can get a better quote.

If you are taking the head off, check and possiblpy have it machined flat before replacing. Also, change your timing chain and slides.
There's nothing there to do in terms of performance, especially not if on a budget. Pulley kit, software and exhaust header are the first steps on M271.
