2002 C240 - Suspension Is Failing

Hey Guys!

It's been a long time since I posted on here hope all is well. Ill just cut to the chase. I think my suspension has essentially failed. There are lots of weird noises coming from the front of the car. When I brake weird noises occur like a door is creaking. When I turn the steering wheel from left to right the noise is quite imminent.

When I did my inspection the dealer told me that I needed to replace the sway bar and the lower control arms along with the upper control arms and etc. essentially the entire suspension system in the car is shot. Every where I go the asking price is roughly $1000. Private, Indy, Dealer, Pep Boys etc..

So I need help, what if I brought the parts online and then had them installed by my Indy? I'm hoping I could save that way. All in all the car has roughly 98,000 miles and it is at this point well underway to becoming 12 years old as it was built in June 2001. So the car is old. But in hoping to squeeze at least two more years out of it before retiring it haha or at least until the CLA class comes out haha.

Ok so what parts would you guys suggest I replace? The LCAs and the UCAs both need replacing along with the Sway Bar. In addition the Valve Cover Gasket needs replacing too. And my Indy also talked about the driveshaft as well needing to be replaced all of this as the car nears the 100K mark!

Not to mention the other mechanical 100K tune up which is another grand from what I recall.

So what should I do? Where can I get genuine parts for cheap? Is this something I could do myself?

Thanks A Bunch!

Vlad

i wouldnt replace the sway bar, I would replace the sway bar endlinks and bushings maybe, the sway bar itself should be ok. you can also just the control arm bushing as well. those are what usually go out after awhile. so i would start with replacing the bushings and not the whole part then spray the suspension components with some silicone lube spray.

Hey Phister,

Thanks for replying! Actually the thing is though my Indy said the entire unit would have to be replaced. All of them turns out the one he put on there last time was some cheap knockoff brand. It's crazy because it is third or fourth time replacing these parts not sure why they keep failing so often...

And they're expensive too!

all W203 have under engineered and defective prone suspension parts manufactured by the various suppliers and has been the weakest link on my car. Everything has been replaced in the front, thankfully most under warranty. Most of the parts have been superseded by a A204 XXX XX XX number not a A203 XXX XX XX number. The new parts seem to stand the test of time. I think that we have to thank the Chrysler involvement to the cost cutting measures by MB which all our cars suffer from

the creaking door sound is the front sway bar bushings and hence why the replacement have molded in bushings. There is a thick sticky grey coloured goop that most dealerships have that they lube the bushings with and it works wonders, I think it is a rubber grease. In Toronto they gave me some in a little cup

Do you know what if any other parts one needs to replace along with the front sway bar bushings, such as the sway bar links maybe? I'm experiencing the creaking door noise lately as well in the front-end. I remember reading somewhere that the new bushings need to be pressed in and that it's better to buy them "pre-pressed"? If anyone has any information on this please post up.

Vlad: If you're just replacing the sway bar bushings and sway bar links (to eliminate creaking noise) PM me. I can show you where to get the parts for $75 shipped.
