you will need the full upper switch row. wires are normally in place (my car had em...)
if you want it completely original, you will neednew seat covers, as the heating elements are sewn in, into the cover... or you can use aftermarket heating elements . wich are a lot cheaper. and itstill looks factory.
no programming needed either...
grtz

Expect the OEM bottom segment to only last a year or two. They fail all the time, I'm on my third set.

Can you do aftermarket heaters with OEM switches? Getting the factory route sounds too pricey. Not trying to go cheap but its not a mod you can see..

it is possible, i have done it like that ...
although i think i haven't done it perfectly, because the bottom part doesn't heat as fast as the backpart... but they work quite good.
I used
A2038217979 7167 as the upper switch row (about 200 $ )
and
A2035403005 98 for the wiring ( about 80 $ )
scratch what I said about not needing any wires ... but installation of this goes quite easy I must say...
as for the work... you will need to remove the center console cover (where the radio/airco controls ... is housed.
also you will need to remove the two seats ... then you can lay down the wiring properly.
If you have some experience with removing all this, it will take about 6 hours if you have the right tools...
all in all, I'm quite happy about having done this. although the fully OEM system works faster/better. but it's way to expensive for my tastes

Yes, unfortunately it's very common. The leather and all needs to be replaced to fix it, you can't just replace the heating element like on other cars. Hopefully MB did a Lessons Learned on that design feature.
