Bypass 4matic?
We recently purchased a c240 4matic and are in the process of determining the sources of our problems. Thus far, we have replaced both front axles. This was done in response to a broken boot and clunking noise while turning. The damaged cv joint noise went away and we are now left with two noises. One is a loud clunk that sounds like the whole strut has collapsed. This is intermittent. For the most the shock system appears very smooth on bumpy roads. Could it be a ball joint?
The other noise is a grinding while turning. This appears to come from the front differential area. How do I determine if it is the front differential or the transfer case? Are there any diy instructions for the differential replacement?
In looking at the system, I had a thought of disabling the whole front wheel drive of the car, by removing the front drive shaft and removing the front axles. Does this sound like a far fetched way of determining a bad front differential? Could the system operate as a rear wheel drive using this setup?
