Question Using radio/cd with no key?

It turns off when taking out the key but on again when I push on the volume button. Is it normal? I know I can't do this on other cars. I kind of like it, though

Yes it's normal. Most German cars (Benz, VW) have this feature.

Cool! This won't drain your battery. Is this like the REST mode for the HVAC? Man, I love my car...

What do you mean it won't drain your battery? Any usage of electricity when the ignition is off will use battery power. I believe the manual states that the REST mode will shutoff earlier if the voltage level drops below a certain point. The radio usage is probably negligible for a short period as compared with the fan and coolant pump operation w/ REST. I'm sure the CD uses more power than the radio alone.

I agree MarkL. Simple trade: Use resources=need to replace resources. Any use (including the temp sensor fan in the overhead console and the ROM heartbeat in the ECU) uses power and drains the battery.

My bet is if you parked your car in the garage and don't touch it for 6 months, you'll have a dead battery.

I'm not into 3 minute headlamp shutoff delays for the same reason.

MR-BOB is correct. The parasitic load that any vehicle can tolerate is not linear. It depends on time and temperature.
Given enough time sitting in your garage drawing current your battery will eventually be exhausted.

What E 4.3 meant, me thinks, was that if you forget to switch the radio off and leave the car unattended for a few hours (or even overnigt), the battery will still be very much alive.

Sorry, I've been out of town. That was meant to be a question and not a statement. I now better understand the value of pucntuation. I am really wondering if it will or will not drain the battery.

Thanks.

Well, I haven't performed any field tests on mine , but overnight it should be ok since the radio would be switched off automatically after 30 minutes or so.
