C240 Water pump noise = 2002
It sounds like my water pump is making a slight knocking noise, but is not leaking. I took the belt of and spun the water pump and it is the source of the noise. Does this mean it is bad a needs to be replaced, or is there a pulley or something that could be making the noise?

Does it have any play? Either way sounds like the pump is bad they don't have to leak to be bad. If the bolts are holding the pulley on I can't see a way for it to be bad unless it is bent or something. How many miles are on the car? Also they are cheap you can pickup a graf one for around $90 or a laso for around $135.

I have 144k miles. Bought it used with 124k. There is no play, but it does make a knocking or heavy clicking noise when you spin it. Sounds the same as what I hear with the motor running. The noise is most prominent at low RPMs and seems to go away as the motor revs higher -- or maybe I just can't hear it over the noise of the engine.

Going to replace the water pump and will do the idler and tensioner pullies while I am at it. Can anyone recommend an affordable place to order this stuff online?

Change the belt and thermostat too. Would not be a bad time to replace the coolant with the correct sauce.
Pelican has the parts from the original manufacturers which are just as good as from the dealer. They also have parts from aftermarket sellers if there are budget considerations.
Keep them honest by checking prices from RMEuropean and AutohousAZ.

Thanks. Pelican looks great. I am getting ready to purchase -- Saleri pump, Febi tensioner, Ina idler pulley, Vernet thermostat, MB blue antifreeze.
Does that look right?

I might have gone with a Litens tensioner to avoid the possibility of a Chinese bearing in the Febi part. Who knows, it is already on the truck, could be a Litens in a Febi box.

Wow. Pelican sure is fast. I ordered the parts Tuesday at 4pm and they arrived Wednesday afternoon. Free shipping.

Installed everything yesterday and all seems quiet now. The old pump was not leaking, but the bearing seemed shot. You could barely turn it by hand and it was pretty loud.
samaritrey - The parts shipped from CA, which explains why I got them so fast. Still pretty impressive service.
atxmike - I am embarrassed to ask, but what is a dampener arm?

I guess it didn't go so well. Everything seems to be running great, but the check engine light just came on (5 minutes into 1st drive after new water pump). I read the code and it says - "Manifold absolute pressure/barometric pressure circuit rang/performance input/turbine speed sensor A circuit".
What could I have done that caused this error?

whats the actual code it gave you? What have you done so far the water pump and the tensioner? Also curious did you have to thread a hole for something on the water pump?

I have installed the water pump and the tensioner. Yes, I had to use a tap to thread a couple holes on the water pump. I only threaded the first 1/4" and the screws seemed to self-tap the rest.

Do you remember what size the holes where that you had to tap? I have to do my water pump once the parts arrive.
Glad you fixed the CEL car should be good for another 100,000 miles.

It was kind of strange though -- I really only got the threads started about 1/8" to 1/4" deep at the most and was then able to screw the bolt in all the way and get the proper torque. It was like the metal allowed for self-tapping. ...or maybe there were threads in the holes that were just covered by paint or a thin layer of aluminum.
The bolts I am talking about are the ones pointed to in this photo I borrowed from another thread.
