Question about oil?

First can you use this type of oil on the w203?
https://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-produ...?code=EFMQT-EA

Second: does it matter if you use a different brand of oil then you did for your oil change if you need to put another quart in? I mean if it's 5w-40 and 229.5 requirements but AMES instead of mobil 5w-40?

It's fine. It says MB229.5. You're good to go. Any oil that says MB229.5 will work.

afaik you can mix oils. As long as they all meet that MB spec, I can't see it causing any problems. Even after an oil change, you're still mixing a bit of the old oil every time..

There are several pages of oils approved for Mercedes-Benz Sheet 229.5. Most of them are not available in the USA. There are several "boutique" oil distributors that blend their own oil and use multi-level marketing like Amway. They depend on lots of people swearing this is the best oil they ever used. How would they know? Did they send it for analysis? Do people swear by it because they paid a premium price, so it must be special? If it is so good, how come you can't buy it at a retail store?

German manufacturers have engineered their engines to use specific oil additive packages for extended drain intervals, better mileage, and long life. That is not going to happen with unapproved oils.

Let's consider Amsoil advertising for the product mentioned in the first post. They compare apples to pears trying to convince you theirs is a special "European Formula." Read carefully what they say:

"It is recommended for European gasoline and diesel vehicles requiring any of the following performance specifications:"

Observe that it is "recommended" for Mercedes cars, but it is not approved because it does not meet the requirements. They would like to sell it to you, so they recommend it for your car, but they don't want to formulate it to meet the specifications for your car.

Chose wisely, it is your car.

Well I only ordered it because I thought you are suppose to use the exact oil as you did last oil change. It said Ames 5w-40 synthetic motor oil on the receipt so I found the website. If you Google AMSoil you do get a lot of positive responses. Random people say it's the best oil out there so i'll give it a try although next oil change I will use mobil 1 0w-40.

what is wrong with just using Mobil 1 0W40 Euro formula? It is what our cars came with, it is what is approved by MB, why try to reinvent the wheel? M1 is excellent oil and I don't see there is a need to change just to be different. The price is reasonable when you get it on sale

for the list http://www.nexttechnology.us/MB/OIL.HTML

For USA cars this is the list of approved oils (first chart), for the rest of the world (second chart)

Amsoil is a very respected company. I am sure they know how to formulate oils to MB specs. Perhaps they don't want to pay MB to get it "certified". MB is interested in certifying oils that are readily available in all parts of the world. They have no interest in spending time or money to certify boutique oils.

Amsoil IMHO are a bunch of BS'ers. I would only use an approved product.

Read all this to save me repeating myself ad nauseum.

Hi glyn amsoil is a big company i doubt they lie about there products being recommended for 229.5. I found a picture of a guy putting 5w-40 amsoil in his Mercedes on instagram it must be approved in the usa. http://statigr.am/p/427594324918015783_216318460

Wake up and smell the hydrocarbons. AmSOIL is a teeny company. It has total sales of 115 million, with just 251 employees. Glyn comes from a real oil company with sales of 250 BILLION and 62,000 employees.

Now pay attention to language. AmSOIL only recommends their product. They do not say it meets the specifications. It does not meet the specifications. It is not because they don't want to pay Mercedes, because you can't. Approved oils must meet the specification and be checked by an independent lab. There are plenty of boutique oils on Sheet 229.5 for gasoline engines, some even made in the USA. They meet the specification.

I use Mobil 1 10W-40. Approved for my Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche cars. I only need to stock one sku.

AMSOIL is mickey mouse. They do not hold a 229.5 approval. They forever make bogus claims to the uninitiated. I'm not going to repeat myself. It's all in the supplied link.

Glyn already posted the approved oils but give this a try. It's a little easier on the eyes

http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/229.5_en.html

I use Motul 8100 X-Cess 5W40 and it's on that list. I plan on sending in a sample when time comes to change it. I change my oil at the 10,000km mark versus the 20,000/once a year given my Mercedes Benz.

I noticed on the list of approved oils from the 229.5 list that Castrol GTX High Mileage 5W-40 is on there. If I am not mistaken, this is a conventional motor oil (dino oil). Does anyone use this/similar oil or is everyone just sold on using the expensive synthetic oil ?

I still use Castrol GTX 20W-50 on my 89 BMW 635 (107k miles) that I only drive around 2k miles a year. I change the oil/filter first week of the year.

I have been using Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 for the last 150,000 miles in my 2004 C320.
I started using it instead of Mobil 0w-40 which burned off at a rate of 1 quart in 500 miles.
With the Rotella, (yep, it's diesel oil) it uses about 1 quart in 3,000 miles.
So far, so good.

Please have another look at Sheet 229.5....The GTX product is on sheet 229.1 and 229.3. It did not appear on 229.5.

Older cars operated OK on the older formulations of conventional motor oil. I can't see how though they do not work better with the "expensive" synthetics. One big advantage is there is no varnish or wax in synthetics. The extended drain interval also saves the user time and spreads the cost over a longer period.

There is another benefit. You can run 250,000 miles with virtually no wear on parts lubricated in the engine. I ran a Porsche 100,000 using conventional oil. It was at the wear limits on the pistons, crank, and cams. I rebuilt it and used Mobil 1 from then on. At 250,000 the valves were tired. I ground the valves, de-carbonized, and measured the other parts. Most were a few ten thousandths from the values I recorded when I assembled it.

For those cars fitted with the older FSS or Assyst systems you might notice you can select oil quality between 229.3 & 229.5. If you select 229.3 it will approx halve your drain interval.

It makes sense to only use 229.5 for the extra protection they provide.

Don't use diesel engine oils either. They are designed with different objectives. They do not control low temperature sludge well because this situation does not exist in a diesel.

Further. Diesels are rev limited by the combustion process & do not run aggressive cams.

Diesel engine oils & especially low SAPS DEO's will not protect the cam & tappet area well & will not prevent piston thrust side scuffing as well.

This is why Benz mandated ash levels for 229.5 for Gasoline passenger car engines & 229.51 for Diesel passenger car engines with Cat & particulate filters so no one product could claim to meet both specs.

With the Rotella, (yep, it's diesel oil) it uses about 1 quart in 3,000 miles.
So far, so good.
Yes ~ because you changed the viscometrics. Not because it is a diesel engine oil. If the vehicle is burning a quart in 500 miles then something is wrong. Likely valve stem seals.

And this.

Quite simple really. I don't understand why some choose to stray
