Question C230K Coupé country of origin?

Recalling the info I've seen elsewhere on the web regarding the C 240 and 320 sedans, some of which are assembled in Brazil, I am wondering if the same is true for the C Sport Coupé...

Or all they all German-built?

I ask because my Dad will likely order one next week (thus making him in all probability one of the the oldest C Coupé owners anywhere) and we'd like to know this beforehand.

If they are assembled there, are they exported only to the USA, or to Canada too? Our local Canadian dealer assures us that the Canadian market cars are all German-made, but I'm not too sure...

Would there be any way (other than European Delivery ;-)) to ensure that one's special-ordered car is German-built?

Mike, to date, all of the (LHDrive) Coupes have been made in Sindelfingen, Germany. The controversy over Brazilian made C's revolves around sedans, per the latest information we have. I too would like to know a way to specify a German-made car. But I think in Canada you're safe.

Assuming your dad is a Peugeot fan as you are, is he selling you his old Peugeot to make room for the C230K?

Talking cars

Thanks for the info/assurances Bob, but I assume that you mean LHD, not RHD. In any case, we'd rather have a German-made car (I'll be the co-owner).

My Dad is a long-time Peugeot fan, but he hasn't owned one since 1979. Right now he's driving -- please don't laugh, not loudly anyway -- a Lada Niva 1.7i 4x4, and yes it'll be sold. It was a good car for the snow country (full-time 4WD, locking diff), but we don't live there any more. His last car (as opposed to Russkie SUV) was a Renault Fuego, a car that the C230K reminds him of (in general layout, not in quality etc).

I still have two Peugeots, and would like to get a C sedan sometime, but that's on the back burner until the 404 Coupé Injection is restored.

Look at the first letter of VIN

All the German-made vehicles must have a "W" as the first letter in VIN. It is a very easy way to define the origin of the car.

Does it really matter where the final assembly is when some of the parts come from china (at least the only part I've seen out of the car, the CD changer was stamped made in china). MB buys parts from various sources and slaps it together, tires, super charger, stereos, wheels, transmissions and lots of parts are not likely made by MB. Heck, some even come from Germany. I wonder if the C sedans made in Brazil are really any worse than the ones made in Germany.

I don't think there is any substitute for German craftsmanship. Witness the bad rap VW is getting for its Mexican-made vehicles. You can't say for sure that a Brazilian MB would be inferior but if there is a choice you know what you would pick.

Germany vs. the world

Call me a traditionalist but I'd prefer my "German" car to be made in Germany, not some other country.

Just as I'd prefer my French cars to be made in France. Hmm, that's a bad example, as my 1966 Peugeot was built in Grugliasco Italy at Pininfarina. Oh oh, and it has German Kugelfischer fuel injection. Maybe it was an early experiment by the European Union.

I'm not saying I wouldn't buy a German car made in another country though.

It is a preference thing, perhaps related to that time long ago when cars reflected the character of the countries they came from.
