check vin for balance shaft issue?
Sorry for the newbie question. I am looking to buy a used 2007 c230 sport tomorrow and doing some research. I have read about the major balance shaft issue on m272 engines, and from what I can tell, I very well may have the issue. Since I don't yet own the car I can't get the engine number, but I do have the VIN. Is there anyone who can quickly tell me if this VIN could have the issue?

This 6+ year old car currently has just 25k miles, but I would probably stay away if it's engine is in the danger zone.
Also, any idea what percentage of possible affected m272 engines actually have the problem? I read somewhere that it is as low as 10%...so still somewhat unlikely.

More info...is this correct?
If I am reading (unofficial) info correctly, engines with serial numbers below 2729..30 468993 could have the problem.
I then found a site to look up the VIN, and it says the engine number for this 2007 c230 is 272920 30 426650.
If that's all true...looks like this vehicle IS in the danger range.
Can anyone confirm for me?

Yes you are correct with everything. That car does have the balance shaft problem. Here is the datacard for that car and the star bulletin on the issue from April 23, 2009

is there a recall for this problem.. I had this problem with my car I had pay 5000.00 to get car fixed it sucks but would like to know if there was a recall cause I can get the money back.....

Call a dealer (maybe not the same one that did the work) and ask if there is a recall for such-and-such VIN.
Then go to your dealer and ask them for a refund. They will probably refuse/tell you to contact MBUSA. Then contact MBUSA. They should refund you at least part of the cost IMO. Good luck!

There's no recall. And a good rule of thumb is to either avoid '07 model year, or just take the VIN to a dealer and search the repair history for balance shaft replacement. Any dealer has access to the VMI which lists the entire repair history as long as it was performed at a MB dealer. And most balance shafts are done at dealers.
