Question Timing chain questions?

1. Have you had problems with your chain? yes, go to Q: 2 & 3 / no, go to Q:4,5,6.

2. What mileage did it occur?

3. Has your car been regularly serviced from new & what oil used?

4. If no, what miles has your car done?

5. If no, what oil do you use?

6. If no, how often do you change oil & filter?

Just curious, as mine has never [yet] caused me problems 2004.7 Facelift Kompressor 89,600 kms full service history Mobil 1 + CERATEC. The MB Indie Specialist [30 years in business], I use said... he has only ever done 4, 3 of which had oil sludge issues.

Your feedback appreciated gents.

I was concerned about the timing chain issue and spoke to the parts guy at one of the largest dealerships in Canada and they looked at a history of chains at their dealership and in the past year and half only replaced 1, they don't stock the part and it is a special order and there is only 1 in stock the parts chain for the whole country.

I also have a MB mechanic who moonlights on the side and has 26 years at MB and he has never seen a chain replaced

My Cape Town Benz dealership owned by MBSA is large but replaces 30 to 40 chains a year. In fairness SA has a large Benz population as they are the 3rd best selling vehicle range in the country after VW & Toyota.

Yes, my 2005 C230 had trouble

2. What mileage did it occur? Noise on start-up began in the 125-135,000 mile range.

3. Has your car been regularly serviced from new & what oil used? Yes, always only with Mobil1 0W-40 Euro car formula.

4. If no, what miles has your car done? Traded at 146,308 miles on 9/22/12 with chain noise still present.

6. If no, how often do you change oil & filter? Always serviced once every 13,000 miles per the service schedule.
