Timing chain question

2005 C230 Kompressor / former: 87 300E and UNIMOG
In the past 10 days, I have noticed a light rattle on cold start-ups which only lasts 1-2 seconds max, then immediately goes away. I have been concerned about whether this could be an early signal of an impending timing chain failure. After a cold start, always sit and let the engine warm up and RPM drop below 1k before driving. This car will likely head to my local indy in a few days to check - would rather pay for replacement of worn parts instead of a major repair. I can do some things myself on the car, but have never attempted to dig into the engine.
