Random erratic idling(video)

Hey guys , my car started doing this weird erratic idling on cold start, doesn't happen everyday and I have no clue what could it be, checked sparks and wires and they seem ok to me , any tips ? Gasket ? Etc...

Here's a video, check how it all suddenly stops at 0:49

Could be a lot of things. Dirty/Defective MAF, dirty throttle body, etc. I'd start cleaning those first & see if you see any results since those are the easiest. Autozone sells MAF cleaner & carbon cleaner for those purposes.

The MAF is new, only got 1k Km on it, i think if it was bad it would probably have failed earlier. I have a spare one anyway and i'll try putting it and see, the throttle body i didn't look at yet, but i'll surely take a look at that tomorrow, seems like a good idea, I'm not sure if the sound it's making is misfires or something else, does it sound like misfires to you ?

If you were having misfires, you computer would detect is & throw a CEL code. Is your CEL on? & What kind of MAF is it? I know aftermarket MAFs are not good & causes a lot of trouble.

No, no CEL light !, I'm going to pull codes tomorrow and see if it says anything special, yeah it's an aftermarket MAF, maybe that's the issue.. I'll give it a good look tomorrow, I didn't get it "calibrated" on STAR since installing though..

I'm 95 percent sure it's your MAF now that you say that lol. I had an aftermarket MAF in january, If I were to drive it quickly after a cold start, my car would jerk VERY violently. It would go back to normal driving after a couple miles. Got a refund from eBay, bought a used one from an old 2002 e320 for $35, has been working perfectly ever since.

oh wow, that's interesting, will give that a try and see, if that's the issue then i'll probably go for an OEM one, did you do this calibration thing though ??

Calibration? I tried doing some kind of reset that involved the gas pedal when I had the aftermarket one, didn't work. With the OEM one, I didn't have to do that, it worked right away.

Yeah i know the gas pedal reset trick, however i've read at a few places before that installing a MAF needs calibration on STAR ... I'll try to confirm that, if someone else knows please correct me !

I highly doubt that. Well then again, maybe you need to do that to make an aftermarket one to work. But an OEM? Nope, plug n play.

No calibration, it's just a part of the pro's install procedure to reset adaptations. Can only be done with SDS.

You were totally right, seems I got a crappy MAF, unplugged if and the engine was really smooth again, so I'll just install the spare one I have !
Thanks for the tip !
