Engine making extra noise

Hi All,

I am new to merc and driving c180 Kompressor W203 Petrol. Just done 52K miles on odo but when I start engine, it sounds more than normal and makes some extra noise. When I asked the same question to mechanic upon first service, he told me that its normal level of noise of a 10 year old European car.

Sometimes, after 2-3 minutes of engine start, noise become decreased but still doesn't look like normal level.

I went to another merc. expert and he changed the transmission oil and managed to decrease noise little bit and said you will be happy don't worry.

But still I feel its an extra noise. I am driving it smoothly at the moment but concerned about the noise and sometimes a burning oil smell from engine.

What can be the reason ?

Have you checked the oil level? Mine was at 7.2qts when I checked it last, when it should be around 8.0qts. You might be burning oil and in turn be dangerously low on oil. Just a thought.

Good luck!

Thanks for your reply neurodave.

I will try checking the oil level. If that is the case then what can be the possible reason of burning of oil ?

I suggest you post a clip of the engine noise so we can hear it. You have not given enough information for us to be of help.

It could be anything from a hydraulic lifter to a purge valve to a timing chain to a tensioner on the poly V belt to an accessory like the AC compressor
