My '01 C320 has SW 32 00 VER 68 and HW 48 00 ...what is yours? You can also find out how much oil you have in .1 qt. intervals by following these instructions I cut and pasted off another forum (and can't find the posting so I could properly give the two authors credit! Sorry.)...and my car read 8.0 qts. when I did this:

"C Class (203) Tip

For those of you that do your own oil changes on your new
203 body C classes, here is a tip that should help you out.
When you do your oil change and complete it, you must all
know these days that there isn't a "dip-stick" to check
your oil. So you have a few options. One buy the MB tool
for measuring it (why bother right?) go by the lame IC
ready of O.K. or what have you. OR check this out.

Key in Position 1 press and hold the left cluster knob for
approx. 20 secs (until you hear a beep)Turn key to position
2 and hit the PAGE down key on the steering wheel. (don't
mistake this for the arrow down key) depending on where you
where at when you started, you may have to hit page down a
few times to bring up the correct "test mode" of the IC.

You will know it when you see it, it will have software
version etc.. it will also have an accurate measuring
reading of the oil in the crankcase. Make sure you run the
car and get it hot, then let it sit for a few minutes (yes
you may start the car with this screen on)

After sitting on level ground for a few minutes you want
of reading of about 7.3-7.5 if you are under/over this may
trigger a low/high oil light on.

BTW, you can start the engine in this mode and watch the
level drop from 7.5 to 6.5, which makes sense. However,
starting the engine in this mode appears to reset the
car's main TRIP odometer to ZERO. No biggie, I guess. "

BTW,. thats the s/w and h/w versions of the instrument cluster only ...

 

Only the instrument cluster? Heck, I thought I was on to something. Is there a way through the same means to determine your system software and firmware? Blimey, aren't you over a liter low on oil (or on a hill/slant)? :-)

 

Just tried it on my C230 Sports Coupe:

Instr SW: 37 01 Ver.: 7D
Instr HW: 49 01

Instr No: A203 540 43 11
Oil Level: 5.5 qts (running) / 6.3 (at engine start)
Eng: M111E E23L (information only displayed after engine start)

Anyone know what the Instr No. and Eng. numbers all mean?

I did some web digging around...

The M111E 2.3 liter engine in C230 Sports Coupe is used in a couple other MB cars. Most significantly, the non-Kompressor version is used in the "Vitokastenwagen" van. I found the following PDF that shows some real interesting engine information:

According to this PDF, the M111E 2.3 engine gives the following specs:

143 HP @ 5,000 RPM
215 NM @ 3,600 - 4,500 RPM

I'm guessing this must be the natural HP and torque of the C230 engine "without" the kompressor. Meaning the kompressor adds 49HP to the stock engine for a total of 192 HP.

What do others think?

The instr nr. is the MB part number for the instrument cluster. The engine number is the engine type (M111) I presume the other letters are the exact derivative (i.e supercharger or not, emissions variant depending on country etc)

Theres a way of getting the h/w and s/w revisions for COMAND, on its screen. To get the others you need the MB diagostic tester ...

 

"hold...cluster knob" actually refers to pushing in the reset button to the left of the instrument cluster

 

I retrieved the same info for my '03 C32 with regards to S/w, H/w, and Instr No.

But had 8.3 qts.*
ENG: AMG M112 E32ML*

* Info displayed with engine off and on unlevel ground.

I always wondered what the engine code was like the BWMs use.
