C-class a good college car?
What is everyone's take on taking a C to college? Does anyone think there would be a problem with other kids being jealous, and thus making life miserable?

I don't think the jealousy thing would be a huge issue, assuming it is a "lowly" C-Class.
My concern would be damage to the car, but that depends on your college. Are you going to commute to college and park in a garage? Are you going to live in a dorm/frat with marginal parking (alley)? It all kind of depends.

Heck yeah, some will be jealous. But that goes for everywhere.
The admiration factor should outweigh that. Everbody's gonna want to get a ride, which would be fine with me as far as the opposite sex is concerned uh oh, here comes the wif adfgtj %#4

im going to a university.. I just CANT decide between the C230 K and the C240.. I like the way the C240 looks alot more, but it just does not have enough horses for my liking.. the c230 doesn't either really, but its better than the C240 lol. adding horse power to these cars costs you an arm and a leg.

are you going far to uni.. as in from home... the reason i'm asking is because you may have to take stuff back and forth....
the 240 does feel week compared to the coupe.. but that is for reason of weight and what not i guess... i opted for a sedan because it was more practical than the coupe.. i would have gotten the coupe if it was my 2nd car ... but it wasn't.. so i decided to go with the sedan...
my 2 cents..

Why does it matter what car you take to college? I'm assuming you are going there to study not to win a popularity contest, right? In that case for your purposes any car that will get you to your point of duty (classroom) on time and safely will do fine. I think a honda civic should be just perfect.

That's not the point. If he/she is asking on a board what car to take to college and wether or not he/she will catch flak from others for envy then his/her head is certainly not in the game. He/she is going to college, to learn, to get an education and reward his/her parents efforts for having put up with him/her for 18 years. Not to prance around in his/her C-Class. The less distraction the better.
Anyway you're just trolling Scylas, I already know where these discussions lead. Regardless of logic presented the camps remain entrenched in the context of their experiences.
Perhaps he should get a civic to learn a lesson in humility.

back in my day, we didnt get no fancy cars for college.... we had to walk there both ways, uphill in the snow, buck naked!!! It taught us a lesson in humility!
get yourself a huffy bike, so we dont have to hear wyatt drone on about how your parents have done you a great diservice. Or you can ritualistically beat yourself every night as pennance for being privledged

College boy eh?
Drive a rusty Renault 12 like I did. Only cost me $75! I had another car too; it was a top class ride, a 15 year old classic Peugeot, at $2500!
You would learn so much more about cars by driving something old, that you have to work on/repair yourself. New cars should be for the middle-aged

C230 Kompressor SPORTS COUPE
I drive a C230 at school and I get very little flack some admeration though... Then again the most common car at my school is the A4. I think the 230 is a better car for school than the 240 because with the hatch back and the fold down seats I can fit everything I have in my dorm room which is key for moving in and out at the end of terms.

It all depends where you go. I go to USC, for those of you who don't know, it's the university of spoiled children. I've seen clk 55's, m3's everywhere (e36 and e46), audi's up the butt, a couple of mba students drive ferrari's and aston martins, plenty of boxters, escalades, you name it we have it. a c is no problem.

These days...everyone has new cars. A benz wont make a difference because theres alot of nice cars out there. More attention goes out the rockets in my school (CSULB). My 2 cents.

Depends on where you go. If you go to a $25K/year private school, a C won't turn any heads at all. (I remember parking my Hyundai inbetween an NSX and Ferrari F360 Spyder.) A small state school would be different. However, the car will be trashed after four years no matter where you go because of the actions of others--nothing you can do about it.

My daughter starts college in the Fall. Very large, reputable University. And she will need a car. As some of you may know, I'm trying to decide whether to get her a 3-yr old used something, or a new economy car that she can drive for four years then I just give her the title. It'll be worth it just to have a reliable car, and an incentive for her to do well without just providing a new car without strings up front.
Anyway, we went to an open house a couple weeks ago, and I spent some time looking around at all the other rides there... Mostly used stuff, a significant number really scruffy and old. Aside from the odd Mustang GT and a modded Civic or two, the cars were all pretty mediocre. I'm now leaning toward used car for my daughter.
Take a Benz into that environment, and I would worry about getting keyed as often as you get the car back from its paint touch-ups. I suppose it all depends on the other cars in the environment. If they're "in the same league", whatever that is, such as USC (whatever) then the Benz would be OK. In other environments, I would say not. Common sense dictates. Common sense...

i agree with you bob, different schools show a very different range of cars.
I went to CMU in pittsburgh, home of people that couldnt quite make MIT/Juliards/or the ivy league :p
Rides ranged from total beaters, to beautiful M3. in general people were pretty respectful of everyones stuff. again common sense goes a long way.

Were you an officer in the military, where your tripe was tolerated due to rank, or were you an enlisted who spent every other week in KP as your mouth got ahead of your brain?

Out Of Control!!
I've heard that they allow bikes on campus now
As Jack said, any car's going to get trashed at any school. I don't think that a drunk friend is going to stop halfway to blowing chunks and think, "Should I be doing this in a Benz?" Stuff's going to happen - I'd say to get something that you wouldn't worry about if you need a car, be happy with it, and trade it in in 4 years on something really nice.

Where is the rancor in butt munch? Besides greg began his demeaning remarks by saying he did not want to hear me drone on. I simply called him butt munch to let him know my indifference to his remark.
What I think is happening is that some people here do not like me. That's OK I don't expect you to like me, nor do I need this type of validation from you. But you certainly don't expect me to turn tail and run simply because you don't want me in the same playground, do you?
If anyone is acting out of rancor it is those of you who wish to silence me at any cost. Still don't know what that poll was about. That's another thing I would never do. Post on a public forum and then publicly detract my comments by removing them. If I say it, I mean it and I will stick to it. If I made a mistake I will publicly ammend to it. But I will never remove it completely since I consider that to be a spineless act. Not enough strength to hold your ground and not enough strength to publicly admit it.
Oh Well

i had an integra through 3 years of my college, and it worked out suprisingly well. hatchbacks really quite versatile. cram 4 people in one, or fold down the seats, and cram tons of your crap in there
the only problem i had with my integra in college was that everyone wanted to borrow it, but i stood firm and no one ever drove it but me.

"Butt munch," for example,
1) has nothing to do with MB automobiles
2) is inflammatory, because you've called someone by a derrogatory name... regardless of whether you or I can agree whether it's rancorous or not...
3) was uncalled for, because nothing in this thread prior to it incited you to use the term...
Where people have reacted to you with rancor, it's out of self defense. Your sledgehammer remarks leave a defensive reaction as the only option for some. It's OK to be opinionated. I have my opinions, too. And, in general, the forum is open to all opinions, provided they are offered with at least a minimum amount of civility. At present, however, you strongly remind me of a school yard bully!
If you can tone-it down a little, think a bit before you write, and confine your remarks to the subject at hand without launching forth with ascerbic, off-topic socio-economic barbs, I think you will find the folks here flexible enough to give you some credence... with time.
