burning oil?

I recently got an oil change around 5,000 miles ago and my car told me today that I need to put 1.5 quarts of oil in isn't that kind of alot? I have have relatively low mileage (only 90k) but I drive my car pretty hard could there be a problem I should be worried about? 2005 c230k sedan m271

Not too bad... I usually add about 0.5qt every 1.5-2k miles, and I don't drive hard.
Dealer will say it's fine.

Depends on the history, really. It might be a leak that has just developed.
Have you had to top off the oil before?

Also unless you did the oil change yourslef you don't know how much oil the shop put in the car. My w203 wouldent give me a warning until it needed 1.5 quarts of oil. Which means that the shop could have put in 1quart less then needed and you woulden't know. I am no expert on the m271 so i can't say how normal that is but i know my m112 did 1 quart every 1-3k with no real consitency.

also make sure you use correct oil to top off since your in the USA 0w-40 mobil one european is the easist to find as well as the cheapest. Walmart carries it in 5 quart jugs and napa has speicals every 2-3 months for 4.99-5.99 a quart.

I dont think 1.5 quarts in 5K miles is bad...

My 112 has 90K++ on it as well, and it used to use about 0.5-1.5 quarts every 3-5K miles. Depends on what oil i use.

Have found the culprit though. My driver side valve cover seal was having a minor leaking. it cost around $175 to replace the seal (both sides) + work.

Am now using Q8 5W-30 oil, been running for 2K with no sign of usage..

As a note, my country temperature is quite high (,around 98-100° F in day, and around 80-95° at night), and i drive in traffic jam a lot, so oil usage is more likely to happen.

I just bought this benz in July and that was the first oil change I had done at the dealer so we'll see if that looks to be the norm, car is running fine so I'm not to worried

I've owned my C320 for roughly 6,500 miles now, and I've burned about 1.5 quarts of oil. That is actually pretty normal from what I keep reading and in my case, seems to be on the low end of oil usage.

No, that kind of consumption isn't too bad. Between yearly changes (I drive about 12-15k km's a year) I put in about 3-4 litres, so 1.5 ish litres every 3000 miles, and my rear main seal is a little leaky.

You COULD just check how much oil is in it by looking at the in-dash computer.
Turn the key to prime the fuel pump (dont start it), and click the mileage reset button on the left of the dash 3 times in succession. Scroll through until you get to a menu that gives your engine read-out (in most of our cases, it'll say M112 E32). Just below it, it'll give you an oil level in litres. These cars take 8 litres of oil.

Well obviously you could check it either electric or dipstick way (depends on year/model) but you have to know how and most people don't check the oil in a car they just took in for a change.

But since we assume he didn't check it right away and probably didn't check it until he got error on screen we don't know for sure where he started from to figure out how much he burned/leaked.
