2005 C CLASS 220 CDI AVANTGARDE
C220 CDI LOSSES POWER

Good morning,

I am very new to the forum, i bought a 2005 C Class 220 CDI Avantgarde in February 2014, ever since i bought the car i have a power problem. When i drive at low speed and later want to accelerate it accelerate very slowly and when it gets to 120 km per hour it does not go beyond that speed. It changes gears but does not move even when the accelerator paddle is pressed down.

It will change when i switch the engine off completely and restart it that it will change gears properly and drive normally. Only if i drive it above 120 km per hour does it not change to that mode. It will go back to that mode when i drive at low speed again.

I have replaced the catalyst converter after being advised to do so but the problem persist and its driving me mad. I am in South Africa, Johannesburg. Can somebody please help. That is the only thing bad about this car.

Does it always have low power or is it fine then looses power after driving for a while?

Common issues are jammed turbo vanes, air flow sensors, EGR valve blocked, boost pressure sensor faults or vacuum leak to the turbo control valve or damaged intake manifold flaps.

Only having the fault code for low boost pressure and if there is never full power then I'd suspect the boost pressure sensor, vacuum leak or turbo vanes jammed.

Good power than loosing after extending driving (usually constant speeds) mostly jamming turbo vanes.

Cats usually give low power all the time, sometimes after changing the cats the air mass meter dies (it would already be failing, but the sudden increase in air flow takes it beyond it's useful range and trips a new code).

Cats on CDI2 engines (mostly ML270) regularly blocked up in Australia, CDI3 engines rarely block cats unless the driver is particularly gentle. This is due to fuel being more finely atomised/less soot on the CDI3 and later engines.

Just fix gearbox leaking and new service, but leaking turbo, injector and tappet cover, does that affect the power or speed performance of a car?
