Mobil 1 0w40 vs 5w40
HI,
I'm driving a 2002 c240 (in South Florida, 65k miles on the clock) which used only Mobil 1 0w40 in the last 3 years I owned it. My last visit at MB dealer to buy valve cover gasket, they recommended to change the oil after the job (i changed the gaskets). They sold me Mobil 1 5w40.
I found at Walmart, Mobil 1 0w40 5qt jugs for $26 and $12 rebate - $16 after rebate tax included (40% of what I paid at MB dealer).
Does anyone know why MB dealers use 5w40 instead of 0w40 (for MB, VW, Audi, Porsche)? I want to kn ow if I should return 5w40 and use the cheaper 0w40.
Same happened to my VW. The dealer changed from Castrol full syntetic 10w40 to 5w40 on my last oil change.
Appreciate your answers.

The 0w-40 Euro is great just use it as it is approved for your car just like the special 5w40 from the dealer.
Your car takes 229.5 specification (you could use older one to I believe for your year 229.3 but .5 is much easier to find in my experience)

that is so cheap, I pay around $13 per liter for the 0w40 euro form and am lucky to find it on sale for around $8.75

I bought 2 jugs of 0W-40 yesterday in Mass for $26 and some change for each jug.
For 1 Mobil1 0W-40 5qt jug -
$26 including sales tax at a Walmart in Massachusetts, US
$49 sticker price on the shelf at a Walmart in Montreal, Canada
Difference between US $ and Canadian $ can't account for all that difference. I am missing something.

I was recently at a Walmart in Montreal and I checked the price of Mobil1 0W-40 5qt jug and I was surprised to see the price was around $49.

We get so ripped off here north of the border in almost everything, most autoparts are 2-3 times the price and that is not even factoring in the sales tax which is 13%. Before any of you say "but you get healthcare etc"... let me remind you that our income taxes are significantly more and also we pay through the nose on sin items such as booze and tobacco.

I use to stock up on Mobil 1 - 0W/40 when it went on sale at O'Reillys or Walmart ($5.99/qt.) in the US. Now since the CDN $ is so low at the moment, the big savings aren't there anymore. I have found that some CDN Tires in my area that carry Mobil 1 0W/40 have decent pricing when it goes on sale. Recently bought some 4.4 liter jugs for $28.49/jug (sale price).

I just switched from the local dealership's 5w-40 to Walmart's 0w-40 because the dealership hinted that my $7.75/qt price tag was going to double.
So far I notice no difference in performance or startup engine noise level.

Check the temperature range as the first number is the cold weather viscosity and the higher number is the equivalent in hot weather. If the car is driven in temperatures above 90 degrees you want the 5W motor oil. The 0W is usually for driving in temperatures below 0 degrees F.
Considering that the car takes 8.5 quarts that is good for 10,000 miles the cost difference is trivial. Why risk damage and increased wear to the engine's bearings with a lower viscosity motor oil to save $60? Lubricants and filtration are the two places where I buy the best I can find, though I ignore the hype for products like Amsoil (third tier motor oil that costs double first tier motor oils). I can get Mobile 1 5W40 synthetic at Speedee in my car for $99. That works out to $0.009 per mile. Not the place to save money.
