Sell or keep: '06 C230 needs $4600 repairs...

I have the dreaded M272 with the faulty camshaft balancer and engine codes P0016 and P0017. I was quoted $4600 to fix it. I am a mechanical engineer, but have never worked on a Mercedes engine so fixing it myself seems like a long-shot.

My car is paid off (as of 2 weeks ago, ironically) with ~120,000 miles. Other than this major expense it is in great shape.

What would you do in this situation? Would you sell the car for cheap (KBB is around $7500 in good condition) or keep it? Finances are relatively tight at the moment in our house.

Oh, and my wife has a 2007 C230! Ticking time bomb??

THE C350
Well the class action if it is ever settled has a 125k cut off at the moment for being covered so you may be able to get some money back once it does settle (have dealer do it in that case)
Either way though IMO sell both cars and get something Japanese if money is even slightly tight as they are far less likely to need crazy expensive repairs.

C230 Sport Coup + 2006 W164 ML350 + 99 Ford Escort (What the heck, it gets 38 mpg!)
I thought the class action went through?
So, my advise, sit tight.
Maybe set the car aside for a while.
The whole thing could conceivably be paid for by mercedes.
Check the W164 forum for info on the lawsuit.

THE C350
Last I heard the terms had been agreed on by both sides but that doesn't mean you can drop by the dealer yet still could be awhile. But yeah definitely do your research either way.

Thanks for the replies!

I called my local mercedes dealer and they forwarded me on to the website: balanceshaftsettlement.com. It sure sounds like I am eligable for 37.5% of the cost of repair, which is a big help.

Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, BMW, MINI and more!
That's good to hear! Might be able to DIY the other things that are needing to be fixed as well to help keep the costs down. We have great tech articles here that could be of some assistance. Hope you're able to get things done and keep the car.

Hmmm I thought the balance shaft sprocket would wear out within the first 60k miles. My car has 75k miles on it and all is well. I get the feeling the balance shaft sprocket has been done at some point when the previous owner had it because I see a ton of black sealant around the front timing chain cover of the motor and there were quite a few small bolts missing around the air injection pump area. I noticed it when I was changing the thermostat.
