Yes I would have liked to install it in the ash tray, but I'm too impatient to wait to get an ash tray, I change the station too much and with a 6speed sometimes its a pain, and I also plan on getting the MB Sirius tuner eventually, so didnt want anything too permenant or hard to uninstall. I too do not like the look of a seperate tuner, but you know, what is a girl suposed to do!!! It looks ok now, especially for a half-fast job, and it works. If I decide to keep XM, Im going to make a cloth coverd pod to go in that corner to house the tuner. I do prefer XM to Sirius but like Citron said, if thats what I have to do to keep the OEM look I'll do it.

Oh yeah, BTW... Putting it there keeps those *******s from changing the station on me!!! I had that in my Jeep, what was worse there is I also had three remotes (one on the wheel and one from radio that was replaced, and the new one) so I never new who was changing the damn station. Those jerks!!!

Jim, I noticed you didnt have a strong signal on your XM. If its not too late you should put it in the same place I did. Its really easy to run the wire to the ash tray, and to go through the firewall, there is large opening going from the fuse box under the hood to the fuse panel in the dash. And to put the antenna in under the grill, there is one torx screw to take out then just pop up the grill enough to slip the antenna in. I get all bars with it there, and no one sees it, you wont even notice it if you dont know its there.

I get a great signal outdoors. I was getting 2 of 3 bars inside my closed garage.

Pictures back online

Well I did get the photo link back up and cooking in case anyone still wants to take a look. It is a first generation Pioneer and not very high tech compared to the most recent models and the antenna is quite a bit larger than they are making today. Even so it has performed admirably for the past three years. The antenna placement is certainly not ideal as I do have some spots on my commute that it cuts out. Also, after looking at the other pictures I would give the under cowl install a try as well.

nice mounting job in the ashtray, looks and seems to fit very nicely there , is that a custom housing you had made for it in there?

Yes

Yes. I had a shop do the install, but it is just a thin piece of wood wrapped in grey vinyl. I don’t think it would be hard to replicate. I would give it a try before paying for the install again.
