I know that when you have to have your car towed for whatever reason, you are supposed to push that little button on your dash, the button with the picture of the car getting towed on it. I have accepted this fact for as long as I have owned my car, but yesterday was asked exactly what that button does. I realized that I have no idea.
Can someone satisfy my curiousity and tell me what happens to the car when you press that button?
TIA

you car alarm system has a tilt / tow sensor, if it senses the car is being towed.. it will set off the alarm.. pushing that button disables this feature so you can tow the car if need be.

Wait a sec though.....if the car already tilted when the alarm sounds, odds are it is hooked up and ready to go so the theif can simply drive off...what good does the alarm do at this point? Does it trigger some other kind of anti-theft something or other?

I think if you have Tele-Aid, they will be be notified of unauthorized movement or entry. It happened to my wife [while I was deployed] when she locked her mom in the car w/o the key in the ignition. Mom opened up the car, and 3 mins later the police had shown up due to a call from Tele-Aid say there was u.a. movement or entry of the car! Freaked mom out, and my wife when she returned, but later she was happy that it actually worked...
btw, when we bought our car; for the test drive, they threw us the keys...saying that T.A. would locate us if we "got lost". I didn't know what T.A. was then, so I thought that was really cool and trusting of them!

i have a question along these lines. when i got in my wreck, i had my car taken to the body shop on a flatbet (no way in hell am i letting anyone tow my car). the problem was that the alarm kept going off the whole way there. i pushed the TOW button thingy that is supposed to disable the alarm, but apparently it didn't turn off the movement sensor alarm or something. as the dude was driving off with my car, the alarm went off so i just hit the unlock button on my key, but as we all know, if the car sits with the engine off, it locks again automatically, so that didn't solve the problem. how do i disable the alarm on a flatbed?

The tow button should also have a little picture of a ferry beside the towhook.
The alarm is likely to go off during a ferry crossing unless it is disabled.
