Talking Getting CD Changer & Tel Equip

Anybody have info on where/how to get the CD Changer (ie, which Alpine is it?) and the telephone cable/adapter to use a cell with my stereo? I know they sell the Timeport; will my StarTac work?

I would like to put the stuff into my '02 C230K myself and avoid using the dealer. Any contacts, instructions, prices and advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

As far as the telephone is concerned, there is a whole lot more to it than just a cable. You have the PSE (The computer brain), compensator, cradle, cords, splitter, etc, etc... You also must use a Mercedes branded Motorola that is compatible with your model year and PSE in order to integrate with the in car systems.

Thanks, what about the CD Player?

Thanks, awiner. I was hoping it was mostly MB cosmetics and dealer mark-up, not additional real telephone equipment required. I am bummed to hear that the StarTac won't work, but not willing to give it-- and the service with it-- up.

Any input on the CD changer and install?

Thanks.

As w/ the phone, I don't believe there is a ready aftermarket changer. Autoclass sells the OEM piece for a good price. Otherwise, I think you need to buy an Alpine + an adapter (more $ than OEM unit) for the MB fiber optic ring or whatever it is called.

The Becker Silverstone 2662 6 disk changer can be used on the Mercedes D2B fiber optic ring.

... But will the Becker unit carry the 4-year warranty like the OEM unit? I'd be tempted to call the parts dept at the dealer and get the prices for the OEM parts, then (if the price is acceptable) schedule the install at the dealer. That way, it's covered under the warranty for 4 years.

Some here have ordered the unit from Autoclass, and had the dealer install... you still get the warranty, that way.

Autoclass Info

Pardon my ignorance, but can someone give me contact info, etc. for Autoclass? Are they pretty decent (knowledgeable, friendly)?

What are you guys thinking a reasonable price would be (parts & labor broken out)? Ease of installation?

Great site. Thanks.

I myself have never done business with them but from what I have heard they have decent service and good prices.
Install for a in-dash Cd Player for a C Coupe should be no more than around $75. Mine was only $40. You ar looking at anywhere fom i think 500-750 for the changer. My Becker unit was $510 na d440 for install for a grand total of $550.

But as far as the phone goes, you should either get it fromfactory or not get it at all. Its a real ordeal to install it from what i've heard.

Actually the phone install is pretty straight forward and simple. The only bummer is you still need the dealer to version code the fiber loop after the install via the SDS laptop.

Since the vehicle is "Pre-Wired" it's just a matter of mouting the pieces of equip. in and plugging the right connections together.

I bought a changer on Ebay, but I have yet to get a straight answer as to whether or not I need to buy additional optic and power cables for the '02 C230. Does anyone have the answer? Thanks

You will need a fiber optic cable and a bracket if you want to mount it in the factory location.

The fiber ring is easy to tap into once you understand how it works. The problem comes into play with version coding the ring. Many have said that the CD Changer will work without the proper version coding, however, we are now starting to find out that after a certain number of thrown errors (DTC's) due to the version coding not being preformed, that the system will almost shut it's self down until the DTC's are cleared and version coding complete.

MBtech is far more educated on this subject and I'm sure he will provide some insight here.
