C240 4Matic dropping out of gear while driving

Hey guys,

New to the forum. Been searching for a similar issue in the forum, but I am not coming across it.

Driving the 2004 C240 4matic through the mountains. Started coming down the pass, in gear to keep pace with traffic without using brakes. Hit a point where I had room to gas it a bit and it seemed to kick out of gear. Pulled over, and without shifting to N/P, verified the shifter was still in D. Sport mode. Hit the gas, a bit of vibration, but no RPM registering above idle. End up shifting to P, restarting and everything was good for a few minutes. Same thing happened a few times on the remaining trip home. No codes.

It was happening a few weeks ago along with loss of power at acceleration and two error codes for lean banks, so I hit Amazon up for a new mass airflow sensor.

It also happens when I am driving and need to quickly accelerate to pass somebody.

So, it's parked as I start going through the Clymers.

Any thoughts?

Car: 2004 C240 4Matic Automatic. 171k. Regular services.
New MAS, Chinese made. Kind of thinking my knock off mas issue might be an issue.

Sounds nearly identical to what happened to my wife's C230 Kompressor; it acted normal until the accelerator was pushed far enough to contact the 'kick-down' switch at which point it would bog down as though starved for fuel.

It never died during this experience and would accelerate extremely slow after until turning off the ignition (pulled over and stopped of course) then turning back on. Then it acted normal until the next heavy acceleration.

It turned out to be a bad accelerator pedal. It's electronic and one of the two sensors on it had gone bad.

I got mine here: http://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/2004/mercedes/c240/fuel_injection/accelerator_pedal.html
and it has been fine ever since.

Hope you get it resolved!

Bob

Is your airbox clipped down properly over the MAF?

Just throwing this out there (maybe some other members can chime in), but there was a recall on a transmission cabling harness cover for W203s where some transmission fluid would seep up the cabling and possibly fry something. Not sure what that harness is connected to exactly but I would imagine the transmission control unit (TCU) would be in there somewhere.

Check at the dealer (give them your VIN) to see if the recall repair was performed on the car.
