I considered an A4. Sharp, nice looking car. VAG makes nice tough bodies. You don't have to worry about getting into an accident with them...you are pretty safe. I had an Asuna run into me one time. Pushed the engine of the Asuna right in to the firewall. Seriously, car blood (green in color) all over the place. The Jetta needed a bumper and a grille...that was it.

Couple things steared me away from the A4:

1) I had a VR6 Jetta and a VR6 Euro Van - everyone in my family has had Volvos, BMWs and Volkswagons since about the mid 1960's. Anyway, both vehicles had outrageously priced parts. some of the costs:
a water pump on the van was $360 cdn to replace, an antenna on the Jetta was over $300 to replace, front wheel bearings - $800, and the list just went on and on and on. Clutch, evaporator, another set of wheel bearings, an $1100 CV joint, and a plastic power steering fluid reservoir for $200 (that was the last straw).

I generally found the Jetta to be unreliable/expensive to maintain. The van was not quite as bad.

2) I'm 6 ft 6 inches and weigh 285Lbs. The Mercedes is a more comfortable car.

Both the vehicles were nice to drive, but......

no more to VAG.
