hey this just happened to me yesterday. My windows was down a little bit and it rained hard and water got into my center console. What’s your email? so you can help guide me if possible

I thought he just changed the transmission range sensor?

Wait, I thought OP, guyszoo said that it was the transmission range sensor, and the post # 10 implies that he just changed that? Or do I need a transmission range sensor PLUS and ESM? I don't even know what an ESM is. You have the link for that? I am not mechanical at all, I probably just need to buy the parts and let my mechanic put it together. I was in the same position as OP, had some rain, then all of a sudden the sporadic limp modes. Now it's more permanent in limp mode. I got the same engine code by the way.

Get the pn from your local mercedes dealer, call and ask for a quote on the shifter (which from the dealer will be like insane) and then ask for the pn based on your VIN.
Since you can't align it I would recommend replacing the whole shifter. Don't attempt to swap the sensors.
I have a thread here somewhere with instructions from when I went through this.
Don't wait till it fails completely. You will be stuck where ever it decides to die with 2nd gear only.

Here's some sample part numbers (not necessarily correct for your vehicle!! There are different ones,
as I found out, with different connectors)
