c230 Kompressor Timing Chain Won't Fit Back onto Engine

I have a 2002 Mercedes-Benz c230 Kompressor that recently had a cylinder replaced. The whole engine head was taken off and redone. Now my mechanic has been having difficulty getting the timing chain to fit back onto the engine he tells me. He said that the chain won't reach. Is this a problem that anyone else has experienced? I'm thinking of towing my car to a different mechanic. Advice anyone? I uploaded two photos of the car's engine in it's current state.

Sounds like he hasn't done one before on this car? I'd find a tech that knows how to time the engine properly. Not worth risking if he's not sure.

Is it the same chain as before? The fact he has a wire on it makes me think so. It didn't magically shrink overnight.

Yes, same chain as before he says. He is a Mercedes mechanic. He's fixed previous issues with the car with no problems. This current issue has me perplexed.

Did he remove the chain tensioner?

If the engine is open like this, you might as well replace the tensioner and chain at this point.

Not sure if the tensioner is the same type as the next generation, but the newer one is designed not to retract (it permanently "ratchets" outward). The tensioner itself can be reset (needs to be opened up), but the old chain probably won't go back in if the tensioner has expanded any notches since the chain was removed.

He did change the tensioner, and I requested that he also change out the chain. My Mercedes had to be towed to a Mercedes specialist in Pasadena where it's being finished. I hope to have it back soon. Thanks for the tips.
