Close Call today...

Me and my wife where driving to her parent's house today. We where on the highway when the car in front of me struck a huge Deer.. The deer ran accross the highway and jumped in front of the small compack car front of me. It was awfull.. The deer went through her wind shield and splattered in to peaces.. My car was covered with blood and hair from the poor animal..

I pulled the Benz over right away. The small car also managed to pulled over. There was not too much left of the compact car. Me and my wife rushed over to the small car with some other drivers who stopped. It was a lady driver about 55 years of age. She was bleeding really bad and shaking like crazy. She was soo scared she was in a shock.. I called 911 right away from the cell. 10 min later the fire dept. ambulance and the police showed up. The lady was OK with cut's to her hands and face.. She was really fortunate.

I think there was some one watching over me. If it was couple seconds more i would have hit the deer with the benz. I don't know what could have happened but i was lucky. I felt really bad for the lady. I hope no one goes through that.

Iceman, I hit a deer in my coupe, (actually he hit me) and it messed up the whole drivers side of the car. Then last night another one runs right in front of me again, but I missed him. I guess the deer are attracted to the coupes He just miscalculated and hit the car in front of you. Seriously, a deer can total a car as fast as hitting another car. Luckily, mine was all cosmetic damage, and was fixed good as new. You were fortunate!

Puhh, glad you didn't hit it!

Do you have badgers where you live? In Sweden we got lots of 'em and they just seem to love to run across heavy trafficed roads. You probably won't die if you hit a badger, but those suckers are hard as rocks and will cuase serious damages to your car. I have been close on hitting two (so far, and two foxes as well, but I dont think a fox will cause serious damages to the car in case of an impact).

Thanks MB for BAS.

Iceman, thanks for the story. Glad to hear that you were lucky. I have seen a couple of animal vs car incidents, and it's surprising the damage that one can cause. I remember a friend of mine witnessed a pick up truck hit a moose. He said that the truck was traveling about 60 - 70 and did not see the moose at all. I have also personally witnessed two deer vs car accidents. One was not too bad; banged up front bumper and fender, but the second one totaled the car.

I know some people that use those deer whistles on their cars. Anyone with experience with these? Do they work?

Can you please tell me where exactly this happened so I pay attention Also, how fast were you moving?

I know you're joking, but I don't think you're too far from the truth. I live about a mile back in a hollow down a quiet dirt road. The other night I was coming home and a 8 point buck came out into the road right in front of me and just stood there. I turned off the lights to get him out of the "deer in the headlights" mode. He sniffed the grass in the middle of the road, looked up again as if to say "oh, you want to get by?" and then just sort of sauntered off into the woods. Either they like this car, or we have some pretty snotty deer around here.

Thanks again

Careful out there!

Hi,

I've lived in rural areas most of my life, I've had lots of close calls and managed to hit a deer, and on another occasion a moose.

You can mess up your car pretty good, but if given a choise of going off the road, or hitting the animal, hit the animal!!

You will almost always suffer more damage going off the road.

This also has insurance complications. Hit the animal and damage is usually covered by your comprehensive. Go off the road and hit a tree and it's a collision claim.

Be careful out there.

Smoky

I have the priviledge in living in the CT county with the highest "road kill" numbers of deer in the state. A few years ago, it was wife vs deer on the way to work in the morning. Deer didnt make it, but Camry had 1500 worth of damage.

The deer are a nuisance and hazard. All over the roads--and they are so desensitized to humans. I have stopped tha car, rolled down the window, and they just look at you. It's not only car damage--they come up and munch on all the landscaping. They will stand right on our porch and munch on the roses!

To add to the considerable nuisance, lyme disease, spread by deer ticks, is endemic around here. So not only is it the damage they can do to your car, but they can give you a fatal/debilitating disease. No Bambi fan here......

i watched an RX300 launch a deer about 15 ft in the sky as it cascaded off its windshield. The driver was ok, but the front glass was broken, and the front end had major damage. it was one of the most disgusting things i had ever seen.... like a dear grenade or something
