Whats the part??
I've noticed for a while now the oil which covers this particular hose in the engine bay. I'm not sure what the part is, but assume it must carry oil to be covered in oil. Could you please help in identifying the hose, the cause of the problem, potential risks because of the problem, and a solution? I've attached a photo of the hose, located behind the engine block on the left. Sorry, the pictures have rotated, but you can see the manifold coming off the left off the engine bay.
Many thanks!

Have you checked the vacuum pump? That is a very common leak on the engine in your car.

Another note on the thread you kindly provided me with, was mention of a slightly rough idle at cold. Someone mentioned that 1st and 2nd gear under load was quite gruff sounding. I've noted over the last 6 months or so, in 1st and 2nd, pulling off under low revs (my car is manual) it's sounded quite gruff, and I often feel sorry for my car, wanting to rev it more and slip the clutch more, which seems to prevent that. Lastly, this oil has been leaking for years, I think it must have just got a bit worse of late that these symptoms are now showing. For the last 3 years though, it's also struggled with cold morning starts. (I say cold, in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, that's about 10 deg centigrade.) The car starts fine, but the revs keep dropping to about 400 RPM where the car shakes uncomfortably about to stall before it kicks the revs back up to 1200 or so, repeating 3 or 4 times before settling. I've recently learnt to rev the car once (to about 2 000 rpm) as I start it, which then seems to prevent that.
Sorry, a long message, but was wondering if you felt like this was all linked to the vacuum pump? If it is, it's worth spending money on for a new one, as the gruff sound and funny start are the only problems with an otherwise immaculate car (...except the timing chain issues, don't get me started).

There is a cheaper way out there where one replaces the individual O-rings, but I was never able to find a proper replacement for the large O-ring. I got fed up after several failed attempts and dropped the money for a new pump. Problem solved.
Another source of a rough idle (nowhere near what you're experiencing though) is a seized alternator pulley. On my car the symptoms also included a chirping sound while the car was in gear but stopped, with the AC on. Not too hard to replace, though the original pulley was seized to the alternator like you wouldn't believe.
Also take a look at the $12 hose, which also causes a rough idle. In Canada and USA there were recalls to replace all the PCV hoses, so hopefully SA has something similar.
Lastly, take a look at your EGR hoses. Mine had all cracked with age. The large one should probably be replaced with another OEM one, but the small ones (vacuum lines) are all quite generic and can likely be found for cheap at a local parts store.
Good luck.
