If you have the second key, try with that second key.

Similar issue
Hi frobi and all,
I have a similar issue in 1999 e320 wagon. It was cold in my city and in the evening the car wouldn’t start nor make usual click when I inserted my key. The steering wheel was locked, the gear selector was locked, though interior and dash lights did come on. I changed key battery and no success. It did start with a jump start, so I changed to a new fully charged car battery, and now it either starts on 3rd attempt sometimes, or I insert the key into the ignition, and press the KEY door lock button twice, and THEN the key turns to start the ignition. Any suggestions?
I only have one key.
