A/C Not Cold Enough

Anyone have problems with their C class (ours is a 02 230k) air conditioning? It seems that ours is not cold enough on really hot days. The system has not automatically shut itself off due to freon loss (according to owner manual, only economy mode will function if there is a loss of refrigerant). I have a service appointment this week, but am curious if anyone else has had this problem.

AC problems

Hi, I just posted another message about my AC on my '02 c230 coupe. It basically turns itself off randomly and of course never turns on again until I restart it. While it is on, it seems to work fine. The strange thing is that it happens once in a while and typically after 15 mins of driving. I am currently having it checked out and will post the result later.

That happens to mine too. But I figures since its EXTREMELY hot then it will take a while for the air to freeze me. It happens in my E Class on hot days too.

I can't complain on my C320. We get many days where it's over 100 degrees here, and so far, my AC has done it's job superbly!

I have had vehicles that get colder faster. The C is fine as far as cooling in mine, but not always the fastest to cool down. On real hot days it takes longer to cool off the vehicle where I have had lesser vehicles that will freeze you right from the get go. Crap my 2000 Neon cooled and heated more effectively than the C does. But it does still cool me when it finally decides to.

Again, I can't complain on this. I am actually surprised at how fast the AC cools off the car compared to others that I have had.

sort off topic. but i also noticed that when the a/c is off. it is OFF. for some reason, in other cars that i have driven, when the a/c is put on off, a slight breeze can be felt from the vents. as a result, i always had to remember to put the temp in the middle or else i'd be too hot or too cold. luckily, my c doesn't do that weird thing.

if people are having the car cool up faster, try putting the car in a shade.

May be the diference between the V-6 version and the I-4, or the diference in the climate control systems since the C320 has a diferent system. Not sure but the only time it does cool quickly is when it is in the shade. Not a biggie, I just roll the windows down til the AC blows cool enough and the hot air gets pushed out of the windows.

Who knows, could be anything.

There is a vent control in the top center that will bring in air from outside. Also, when you shut the AC Off (by using the Econ button), you can still control the fan, so you can still get a "breeze" if you want.

You could be right. I'm not sure if having the V6 makes a difference. All I know is that if I'm parked somewhere in the sun, my car has normally started to cool off by the time I get out of the parking lot, and is at a nice comfort level soon after.

The big glass sun roof of the coupe could make a difference also.

Forgot about that one. Yeah I do notice a big diference in cooling if the shade has been closed while in the sun. That could just add that much more heat to the inside making the AC have to just work that much more. Could be a big diference in Compressors as well. The 6 getting the bigger one and the 4 a smaller to create less drag on the smaller engine.

You might want to invest in a windshield sunshade. It'll reduce the internal temp of the passenger compartment giving your A/C system less work to do on initial start-up. Some type of rainguard on the windows (such as MacNeill Weatherflectors) will allow you to keep them open slightly also aiding in keeping the internal temp down.

I use a sun shield on the front (just a cheap Walmart one) that works very well! I finally got my windows tinted so I'm hoping that will help it as well.

My problem with my climate control unit wasnt the temperature, but the air flow. The air flow from settings 1-5 was the same and 6 was all out full. My extended warranty covered for a new climate control unit - have a newer version of the unit as compared to the 2001 version.

It still takes a bit of time to get the car cooled off when it is 100deg outside - even with a windshield shade and the windows cracked open a bit here in AZ.

It happens to me as well during summer. The air-con seems never cold enough or I have to wait for a long time for the cabin to cool after leaving the car out to the sun for the whole day.

I am glad that winter is here though (from where i am anyways)

I live in Arizona where 110 degree plus temperatures are common. My 2002 C320 air conditioning was always up to the job. It would be on high when getting into a hot car but would quickly cool things down so I could operate at a low fan setting. My 2001 C320 wasn't nearly as good especially for the rear seat passengers but a fan was added in the lower center console that increased air flow to the rear and the entire car was somfortable.
