ESP Inoperative?

Hi Everybody, new here!

Just very stumped on this. The "ESP not available, see owners manual" & "ESP inoperative, visit workshop" messages have been popping up after taking off the steering wheel, maybe something to do with the steering angle sensor not being aligned or something? I have tried to reset it by turning the wheel from lock to lock 5 times but to no avail.

I then tried the main dealers but the price just to reset the light far outweighed the annoyance of the light, so I left it.

Although I have driven over 5000km with the messages on, I have decided to just try the DIY option.

These are the issues i've been having
- A scratching noise when turning left coming from the steering column
- ESP Messages
- Cruise control not working

What can I do to fix this without paying hundreds...

Thanks

(The car is a 2007 C180 Kompressor with 206,000KM)

My brother's car is a 2006 C220 CDI Avantgarde, with exactly the same symptoms. I have read on the forums that the issue could possibly be resolved by something as simple as removing and cleaning the steering angle sensor. I was going to try this, but the nut holding in the steering wheel just wouldn't budge.

If you did manage to resolve this issue, please let me know how.

Good day boys and girls. I own a 2006 C280 4Matic and a few days ago my Speedtronic and EPS Inoperable warnings came on display in Instrument Cluster. This occurred while driving using cruise control which ceased being engaged. I got home and checked fuses 59 and 60 (ESP) and both were fine. I got back to driving the next day and no warnings came on, however in afternoon the warnings came back on after about an hour's drive. I got home and disengaged the connector on the ESP module (is this also the ABS module?) and connected it back again. I need to invest in a good OBD2 MB scanner, any suggestions prior to scanning for codes? thanks in advance.

When you took everything apart, did the steering angle sensor and the clock spring come off together? Did you turn the center portion of the angle sensor at all when you disconnected everything?

I ask cause when you put the steering angle sensor back on, you should see a little hole on the front. As it turns, you will eventually see it turn green (the plastic inside of it is colored) and when you see that it means it's aligned. That's how it should be installed back on. I found a YouTube video on it a while ago.
I am having the same issue. When I took mine out I was a little forceful on it. I also had an issue where the clock spring came unraveled so I had to wind it back up. All this and I am still getting the error. Probably just going to buy a new one ($350 at dealer) and be done with it.

Try crankshaft sensor

I had exact same thing and the crankshaft sensor was the last sensor I had to change and it fixed it

When you are driving is the steering wheel level. On mine it was a few degrees out. I adjusted both track rods one turn at a time until the steering wheel was level again. That worked for me. ESP off and cruise controls working again.

What do you mean track rods? How do you adjust those?
