When i move the auto-transmission shifter, i makes a sound as if metal hits metal. A recent visit to the dealer for a different reason they noted "shifter linkage loose". Unfortunately i did not inquire more info from them on this.

What is the probable cause for this, is this dangerous and how can it be fixed?

I have been reading some threats and it sounds like i might have to replace the electronic shifter module (ESM) , or is there a bushing that i can replace and save the hundreds of $ needed to buy a new shift assembly.
