What all can cause P0017?

Hey guys...

got a CEL sunday, P0017. A couple months ago, I replaced the intake cam sensor, and eliminated the p0016 and it didn't come back.

Now I have replaced the magnet, and sensor on the bank 1 exhaust cam, and read the codes after idling for five minutes, pending P0017.

The car is full of oil, changed about 6k miles ago, and the motor has about 70k miles on it.

Is there anything else that can cause the P0017 code only?

Very common problem on the M272 engines. Replace the rest of the magnets. If you replace the magnets and the P0017 AND P0016 return together, then you are likely looking at the dreaded Balance Shaft issue.

So to sum up how I handled this issue,

I traded for a very nice 07 e550 4 matic.

I was driving through local lots, perusing the inventory, and saw this 550 sitting there, and stopped to take a look. The thing is near perfect inside, and probably an 8/10 on the outside. I read the sticker and the car had been sitting on their lot for 45 days, so I made an offer and they took it.

I liked how nimble the 230 is, but it isn't very fast, and mine had a few cosmetic issues. The windshield took a rock a couple weeks ago, and needed replaced, the headliner was falling down, the center cup holder wouldn't stay closed, the paint was chipped off the front bumper in many places, and the clear was starting to come up on the back bumper.

As far as the code, after changing the sensor back to the OEM one, and clearing the pending P0017 code about 10 times, it stopped coming back for about 24 hours, came back one time, and then went away again for three days til I traded the car. Kinda a head scratcher.

Glad you were able to upgrade. Yeah I had the same experience with the P0017. I cleared the code and it went away for nearly a month. But for anyone in the future, do the above and swap the cam magnets right on the front of the engine. I would recommend doing them all at once. I cannot remember if I also changed the cam position sensors at the same time, those might have thrown a different engine code so I don't know. Be sure to replace all gaskets, there is one on a oil cooler or pump (big silver box) you may have to take off to get at one of the magnets.

ANNNNNND Also be sure to replace o ring or seals around csm position sensors. Here is a link if you don't know what these are
