For a few weeks I would have occasional problem with the trunk opening. I would get the ratcheting sound when I pulled the trunk latch and it wouldn't open. Eventually it would open but then it got so bad it was a gamble if it would or not. A few days ago I got it open and went to shut it and it wouldn't shut-the rear latch mechanism wouldn't work. I took it all apart and found a small broken gear piece inside. So I believe that is the culprit, but just wanted to know if there was any chance the upper lock/handle mechanism could be faulty as well? (I figure fix everything while I have the trunk cover off.

Just the switch that's actuated when you pull the latch handle to open.
If it's the motor operated latch itself, well, likely just replace it.
If you can't find one for a reasonable price on ebay, we got lots of these
in the local picknpull, and I can get one if it's worth my while.
Fact is often ebay is cheaper than PnP.

Is there a good picture of this item or what should I look for online, by name I mean? Crap, maybe it was just my microswitch that went out, because my trunk wouldn't open, wouldn't open, just made a grinding sound. Once I got it open the latch would not latch. I couldn't manually reset it so it would latch. I push the trunk down and it just slammed and wouldn't latch. I took the latch off and opened it up and found a piece of white gear floating around, so I just assumed it was that switch.
