Exclamation 2006 C220CDi - Black smoke and loss of power

I've been looking through the forum, but it seems this problem hasn't been encountered in this particular configuration.

I was on the open road a week ago (transmission in C mode, cruise control engaged - 326,000 km on the clock), when there was a very slight lurch followed by a cloud of black smoke. The smoke continued quite consistently after that, and the engine would not rev beyond 2000rpm, or downshift when the accelerator was completely depressed. No "Check Engine" light. When going up hill and loss of speed and power progressed, it would downshift, but still hardly any revs beyond 2000. After the car had been switched off, it returned to normal, but with persistent black smoke.

I replaced the turbocharger (which had been a bit suspect for a while.)

At first, there was some white smoke, then no smoke, then some black smoke again over the next 2 days, but power remained. (All in S mode) Then the smoke seemed to disappear, and car was driving brilliantly. Yesterday, I tried C mode again, and sure enough, going up a hill, revs would be limited to 2000 - no downshift, however this time, no black smoke was observed.

UPDATE:

So I've had the car at my local mechanics, and have been told that the intercooler is faulty... Can this be?
