P0705 Transmission Range Sensor Error Question

Hi All,

Recently experienced transmission limp mode / CEL / semi-locked shifter issue on my 2005 C230 the other day. Currently the dashboard shows the transmission in D (drive) independent of the position of the shifter with "Sport" / "Comfort" indicator blank. ODB read P0705 (Transmission Range Sensor) error.

Common Causes:
-TCU (Not filled with oil, thank god)
-Shifter assembly position switch / PCB <--Likely candidate

My question:
Out of curiosity, I disconnected the shifter position wire harness and turned the key on. The dash STILL indicated the car was in "D" (Sport / Comfort indicator was blank).
Does it make sense that the open circuit behavior would display "D" on the dashboard without the position switch connected?
Could this indicate a TCU issue, or am I just being paranoid?
Thanks in advance!
Ben

C230 Sport

You were right...Thanks for the extra confidence in the diagnosis. Bought a new assembly for $500 off "newparts" and swapped it in about 1.5hr and we were back in business.

Thanks!
