2002 C320 Sport Wagon - tensioner and idler pulley

Hello MBWorld!

I知 a new member of the group. I知 excited to learn a lot from all of you.

Quick question...

Do I need to replace the tensioner if I知 replacing the idler pulley and belt?

Also, what possible damages would it cost if the car was driven between 10-15 miles after the belt snapped?

Unless you’re extremely cost conscious, you probably should replace them both.

You can can check them by turning them by hand with the belt off. They should turn easily, without clicking, grinding or wobbling. Also, they shouldn’t “free-wheel” or spin for a while when you stop turning. If they do, the lubrication in the sealed bearing is gone and they won’t last long.

The belt powers all the accessories including the water pump so if you continue driving without a belt, the engine will overheat. You’re probably thinking “How far is too far?” I can’t answer that...but if it overheated, you should check for exhaust in the coolant and oil and coolant mixing to make sure you haven’t blown a head gasket. You can get test kits at the auto store to check this.

Yeah, your dash woulda been lit up like a christmas tree.
If you overheated, it would have said something to that effect, but hell, no
water pump turning? Yeah, it's gonna blow.
Unless you have 2 belts and only one broke, like on mine.
On my car I have one belt for the Supercharger/ Alternator, and another for everything
else. How about you? One belt or 2?
