GETMECOFFEE: My wife had nearly exact same problem with her 02 c240: pulled into driveway and could not shift shifter into park. I turned the car off, applied emergency brake, fiddled with the shifter and was able to get it into park. Something definitely wrong and it appears what you did corrected the problem, but I don't quite understand exactly what did you do, part(s) that you bought, disconnection made etc. Could you elaborate a bit more in detail on your corrective procedure. Thank you

Excellent! I think I understand now. Will most likely go to a junk yard and practice dismantling a shifter and obtain the NSS. Good to know you don't have to get under the car to detach the shifter hook from the transmission, which should make it somewhat easier to replace the clip that holds the hook on the shifter to the transmission linkage. Thank you

Found a 02 C240 at junk yard with an intact floor shifter (electronic selector lever module (ESM) control unit), but part number did not match my vehicle’s floor shifter/ESM. So, went ahead and removed the semi-rectangular black box (neutral selector switch (NSS, see photo below) inside the shifter instead of just using the entire shifter/ESM. The NSS had a different part number, but looked exactly the same, including wires and connectors as the NSS in my shifter/ESM. Cost $11 at the junk yard. Made the swap using Getmecoffee guidance. Reinstalled shifter/ESM with and center console and walla! – car back to normal. While doing this repair also used the following videos to guide me along.

Below is an excellent video on procedure (part 1 and 2) for removal of the center console, which will allow you to access and disconnect the shifter hook (called “intermediate lever” in maintenance manual) from the shift rod from inside the car.



This video provides a quick run-down on how to remove the shifter/ESM without removal of the center console, but you will have to get under the car to disconnect the shifter hook (intermediate lever) from the shift rod.

My OBD II Scanner had a P0705 code - "Transmission Range Sensor A Circuit (Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive/Low input) Pending," which, apparently, is a general fault code related to the transmission.
