Canada is getting them beginning in two months (cdi Diesel version only, cabriolet and coupé). Available at our local friendly M-B dealer!
The US is getting the smart brand beginning in 2006 with the "formore" SUV. Maybe you'll get the next generation smart fortwo....
I'm getting a stream green fortwo cabriolet in October!

I've heard that MBUSA is receiving the Smart car this September. Although I don't think my family will get one anytime soon, I'd definitely like to take that car for a test spin at my local dealer.

I love the smart - very cool and distinct looking car. I believe they are going to put them in the new R-class instead of a spare wheel

I have recently been invited by smart to do an online survey on my thoughts about the smart fortwo. Typical questions about myself, impressions of the smart, would I buy one, etc. They also asked if I would be interested in participating in an in-person survey. I haven't heard anything more. This certainly lends credibility that smart is exploring the possibility of bringing the smart fortwo to the US. The survey was definitely directed at US residents.
BTW, check out Zap. They are looking to start selling the smart in the US.

BTW, MB plans to keep this car, although competitively priced/designed, fairly exclusive as they only intend to sell limited numbers each year (forgot the exact number). Think Mini Cooper.
I just hope it doesn't go the way of the Scion xB...

I'm not gonna tell you all the reasons why it's an entirely safe car. Go to a couple of the threads in the smart forum if you want more detailed information.
Suffice it to say that it holds it own in a 100 km/h closing speed offset head on with a Mercedes-Benz E-Class and S-Class. This was recently demonstrated to the Canadian press in advance of its September release in Canada.
