Any Cold Air Intake for C-class???
Believe me I thought about it already. I think having it therma-alumi coated should be a good enough heat barrier. If not, then wrapped. But not trying to make it look like some cheap gawdy bolt on peice though, ya know. Esp with investing time and money into it. I want to do this right.
"Mod Once or Spend Twice"
if you do....pipe it down there, it wouldnt be as hot as the engine bay. and finish it up with a 3 inch or 3.5 inch piping SS piping!!! with a big enough cone filter.
its definetly been considered. however, i dont want it to look like a track car cause its TOTALLY not, ya know

or...since u have a 4 cly. the...driver side of the engine bay is more free. pipe it over there. maybe its not as hot if you somehow find a used gruppeM cf surround!!!
*edit* sorry for the HIGH quality paint skills

Also, because I havent really humored the idea, I will be getting new mesh for lower air dam, which as your right, open that area up more. Ill have to see what kind of space I'll have for a nice functional CAI if i choose to go that route. good call and kudos to the creativity.

What exactly do you want?
If you want to upgrade to something that will improve airflow, you could look at the following:
POD filter (with aluminium or carbon fibre heatshield)
or
Stock or Modified airbox with aftermarket air filter
If you go for a POD filter, it will probably be more expensive because you will need a heat shield for it to work effectively.
If you want a cheap performance mod, maybe you could see if K&N or someone makes an aftermarket filter which fits in the stock airbox.
I recommend you make yourself a manometer to check the pressure drops caused by the components of the intake, then decide how to increase airflow.
The stock W203 airbox, by the way, is not a bad design. However I have not taken one apart and analysed it, so I don't know the internal flow design or where pressure drops occur.
also should upgrade your hosing from that stock snorkel style fabric hose to a high temp id silicone thats reinforced or atleast 4ply.... that upgrade with the air box mod will increase power some. And improve airflow instead of the corrugated tubing and restricted air box.
can also use stainless tubing... or a universal intake snorkel tube... if you go with the snorkel tube you'll run into issues with air flow on the corrugated interior but if you go with stainless you have to heat wrap it to avoid heat soak issues... either one works but I personally would go with the stainless tube wrapped in aluminum foil tape or high temp exhaust wrap...
