Timing chain replacement
Are you supposed to replace your timing chain, i got the m112 engine and the last owner tild me that you never have to replace it but i dont really trust that, my car is driven 186.xxx km

No, the timing chain in an M112 engine should outlast the rest of the car. Now, the M271 (I4 engine) uses a single-row chain and it has been known to break or stretch.

And there is no easy way to check if the timing chain on a M271 engine has stretched, correct? I understand from reading other threads that a rattling noise on start-up might be the only indication of something going bad. I am guessing removing the valve cover and tugging on the chain would not be a reliable method of checking.
I have close to 200k on mine with the original chain. The chain pre-tensioner broke off a while back, but apparently did not cause any consequential damage at the time. Has anyone gotten recent quotes for replacing the chain?
