Brake lining warning light

Brake lining warning light
I replaced the brake pads myself but the warning light stays on.
Dealer told me that because my rotors might be bad and will need
resurface or replacement. They want to charge me $400 for that...
Any truth to this?
Thanks,

Sorry.. I should give a bit more detail.
No.. the car has 30k miles... I changed it for the 1st time last
weekend. Warning lights were ON BEFORE I could changed the pads.
If I understand how sensor works correctly, it should have nothing to do
with the rotors (unlike what dealer is trying to tell me). However, I could
probably only reset the light after changing the sensor first.

If you can easily get to your sensors again do so. Check to see if the wiring is exposed and broken. If that is the case then you will have to replace them as the circuit is broken and therefore the light.
Now in regards to your rotors and the stealerships answer. If you want to, get a second opinion or get aftermarket rotors and do it yourself.

If the light was on before you changed pads, and didn't change wear sensors, that's your problem as amdeutsch said. You can replace them with new ones or just remove them and the light will go off.

Thanks,
a little truth to it:
Many people try to get away with just changing pads, no new rotors, no machining rotors. Some people seem to get away with it, others never seem to have the brakes wear in properly.
If you want to guarantee full stopping power, you should generally machine the rotors. Also before the parts are go together, thoroughly clean the rotors with some solvent (Varsol or similar) and ensure there are no oils on the rotors. Use clean varsol, with clean white paper towels.
After changing, brakes usually wear in the first week or so of normal driving. After that point there is generally little gain in performance over time. If you feel they are not up to their best, ( can you get the ABS to kick in on Warm Asphalt ?) machine the rotors and try again.

where did you get the brake pads? How much? Front and Rear? Need to do the same job on my '02 coupe. Is it really a DIY job?
