Stock Rim Wheel Weights...keeping MB-BOB's request alive!

Well had the chance to weigh the stock rims on the C320 Sport Package Rims today (the 5 spoke, made by Ronal). For reference, I also had the MB stock steel wheel and wheel cover for reference. The results were quite suprising!

Alloy 5 Spoke 16X7J = 19.5 lbs
Steel wheel with wheel cover 16X7J = 20 lbs

All weights without tires, just bare rims.

So there is *only* half a pound difference between the two. I thought that the alloy wheel would have been much lighter than the steel. Without the wheel cover, the alloy wheel would be on par with the steel wheel. Now is the Ronal wheel overbuilt, or is the basic no frills steel wheels light?

Also the bolts for the steel wheel are much shorter than the ones used for the alloy wheel. Always use the shorter bolts for the steel wheel, there have been stories about people using the longer alloy wheel bolts on the steel wheel and damaging the parking brake etc.

The steel wheel used for reference is a full size wheel, and not to be confused with the mini spare tire.

Alloy wheels are popular because steel wheels rust and are typically quite ugly (hence, the need for covers). It has nothing to do with weight.
