2002 Merc C320 transmission clunks and code P0702

Hello - I bought this Mercedes in a charity auction. The battery was dead so i changed it. After I started it I went to put it in reverse, this caused a very loud clunk and the whole car jolted! I’m guessing it’s in limp mode? Same thing happened when I put in it drive.

I have a OBD2 scanner and pulled the following codes:
P0702 Transmission control system electrical
P2065-04 No DTC definition found. See service manual

I'm really looking for a diagnosis, I can fix most things.

Does anyone have any advise on how to proceed and whether this is worth fixing?

Thanks

Well you're going to need a scanner that reads Mercedes codes.
The transmission controller (ETC) is under the footwell panel on the PASSENGER side.
Pull back the carpet, and you'll find it.
Check to see if it has trans fluid leaking into it from the connector.
If so, it's toast.
Thats your 1st step.

Common failure caused by leaking orings in the transmission wire loom that goes from
tranny to the computer / controller.
Replacing the controller is easy, but you'll need to replace or at least clean the
wire loom, flush the fluid, and change the connector piece with the updated orings.
Controllers can be had on ebay, just make CERTAIN it's the same part number.
Plug and play.

Some informed reading on the transmission
https://mbworld.org/forums/c-class-w...n-related.html

Here's everything you'd need to flush the fluid except the fluid.
And here's a good deal on approved fluid.

P2065 fault brings you right back to - Component N15/3 (ETC control module) memory is fault.(P0702)

ETC- (Electronic Transmission Controller)

10 to 1 odds, oil in the loom and fried ETC.

Clunk in reverse, yes you are right, limp mode.
2 reverse gears, and it goes into the 2nd one when reversing in limp mode
Also 2nd gear only in drive.

Thank you so much for your reply. That’s just the info I needed!

Would you recommend a cheap scanner for Mercedes? Is the Carly scanner any good?

Thank you once again

DOH! ETC is under the footwell on the right side ie passenger side in the USA.
I haven't used the Carly scanner, but I have the iCarsoft and the old
Carsoft 7.4 . Old Carsoft is a PIA, needs an old computer but gives better data.
New iCarsoft give me a lot of 'unknown' readings on my 2002 C230
which is what I thought I was paying for to NOT have 'Unknown" codes.
Maybe it's because of being an older vehicle? In any case I was a bit disappointed, bought the $150 model, but the
cheaper one would be just fine.i980 on ebay.
It also doesn't save data or have any ability to print reports, so I take photo's with
my smart phone.
Smart phone solution like Carly would be nice,
I love 'Torque', emailing reports to myself etc.

But even with just OBD you've got pretty clear marching orders, and may not
need a MB specific code reader to resolve this.
All roads lead the wire loom and a fried ETC.

'06 c230 sport limp mode (code 0702)

Hello all,
I bought my first car in September 2020. It is a 2006 c230 sport. I have a problem with the car shifting out of 2 gear. I changed the coil packs and spark plugs, nothing changed. I proceeded to bring the car to a transmission shop where they scanned the car for free the owner tells me the code he got was p0702. I watched a few YouTube videos about the code and what I need to do to reset the 0702 code I got nowhere with it. I purchased a $150 car scan tool called MBII by iCarsoft, from the YouTube video I watched. I honestly can admit I didn't know what I was doing when trying to reset the code because the video I watched wasn't clear enough when it came to resetting the code. I've been doing some research, which stated that the problem could be as small as buying a new battery. I decided to leave the car alone until today. I randomly found a link that leads me to mbworld and another link that leads me to the c class thread. I am looking for some help from some experienced w203 car owners. Any help would be great. Thank you.

I am having the same issue here with my 2007 C230. From the research I did, it seems like the conductor plate for the transmission could be the issue. I have no check engine lights on, but after about 10 minutes of driving, the car goes into limp mode. I have to pull over and put it in park or restart the car in order to get it to go back to normal. I guess we shall see what happens.

I saw the same thing too. The problem I noticed was every website that sold brand new conductor plates were for models 2005 and lower. Have you changed your battery since purchasing the car? Because I haven't since I purchased my car in September. My next step after buying a new battery would be checking the conductor plate if it doesn't work for me.

I haven’t had the car since new, but from the service records I have from the previous owner, the battery has been changed twice. I’ve never had any other issuing relating to the battery, so part of me is leaning more towards the conductor plate as the culprit since it seems to be more common. I will probably look into buying the conductor plate tomorrow, but I may call a dealer for the heck of it just to see if they can spill some information as to what might be causing the problem.

When you mention it to me that way, I would think it would be the conductor plate too.

You have 7 speed and you can't buy a conductor plate. They won't sell it.
Go figure!? Only can send it out to be repaired! Google it.
