Crappy Windshield Wipers

Does anyone else's windshield wiper's wipe like *****?

This car must have the worst wipers of any car I've driven. Is there any way to adjust them?

My pass. side wiper squeals like mad. I've tried cleaning them with alcohol and WD40. No good. I'm buying some replacement blades next time I'm at Walmart.

Funny you should ask....

It was raining in Dallas this morning, so I thought "Cool, get to check out the automatic wiper function". Well, that part works, but after about 15 minutes I started noticing a black streak in the center of the windshield where the driver's side blade stops its' motion. It's like the rubber was wearing off, or some oily residue was coming off. Looks like someone took a grease pencil and drew a line down the windshield.

I'm gonna look at it tonight, but I was thinking about replacing the stock pieces with some silicon blades.

My passenger side chatters a lot, I think it may be due to the angle of the blade and it might be resolved by bending the arm slightly. I get squeal occasionally during light rain only and when the system is on the intermittant setting. I am leaving the "adjusting" to the dealer, but its looking more like they probably won't have the time to get to it due to the length of my "Laundry List" for service "A".

Unhappy Wiper Problems

Chattering is prob common to all wipers - but try Formula 303 Wipes for Wipers. Also try cleaning them with whatever you are using on the black trim - it may work. I use Zaino tire treatment on the black surfaces and rubber and it seems to work well.

If that doesn't work, have dealer replace them - that's what the warranty is for -- at least, with Audi, if you complain, you get it -- even floor mats.

One Word "RainX"

I only changed the blade on my last car once in 2 years because I use rainx. LOVE IT!

Wink Agree with Rain X

Used it on windshield and it does help wipers, also use it in the washer fluid -- but you need to put it on once in a while. Use it after you use Stoner's to clean your glass. .

I just "Rain-X'd" my windshield last weekend. Doesn't seem to have made any difference. Besides the black streak I described above, I'm getting the chatter on the passenger side as well.

Ditto.

Also, the factory MB washer fluid ruins the Rain-X effect. It cuts through it like it does Zaino. The stuff is like paint thinner.

As far as windscreen cleaning is concerned - I'd say they are about the same as those on any of my previous/other cars, including Bimmers, Maxima, Volvo.

However, what really irritates me is that the driver side wiper doesn't go all the way to the A pillar, leaving a large area near the pillar unwiped... Anyone else noticed this?

I have to disagree with you guy's on this one. I think this is the only car i had with great wiper blades. No streaks, no viberations no nothing. Cleans really good. I am happy with mine.

wipers

I think the wipers do a fine job. I used Rain-x and the wipers started chattering. This didn't last long because of the windshield wiper fluid MB installed at the factory. I was first upset that I couldn't use Rain-x, but with the frequency of the wipers with the rain sensor I can do without. I would rather have the Rain-x, but then I would never want to use the rain sensor.

Maybe I am just too forgiving, but I think my wipers are fine.

Two Words: Bon Ami

Explaination of why wipers don't work well

Bimmer has issued a service bulletin regarding the fix to noisy, or non optimal performance of wipers even though the blades appear new. Their solution was to use Bon Ami glass cleaner.

do you guys all use the special MB window cleaner in your wipers, or can i just use the good old blue stuff? they have this complex description in the manual, saying you have to mix it and stuff. if i poured just straight up blue stuff in there will it hurt anything?

The problem is unlikely to be your wiper blades. It is more likely to be a film on the window surface. Try running a clay bar on your glass surface to remove any grime. Ideally you should have minimal surface tension of water on the glass surface for wipers to work properly.

is there a way to remove the film w/out using a clay bar?

b/c, i've noticed the telltale sign of the film in the shape of the wiper moves.

Window Cleaner

Have you tried a really good window cleaner like Stoner's or the one they sell at Restoration Hardware? Stoner's is great and should remove anythinkg on the surface. Try 303 Windshield wipes also.

Take a wad of old newspaper and pour a little ammonia on it.
Then wipe down your window. This will clean the film off the glass.
